Thomas Keiser, entrepreneur, former NFL linebacker, and Vice President of the Misingwa Land Trust, is calling attention to the importance of protecting Western Pennsylvania’s natural resources as communities continue to balance growth, land use, and environmental responsibility.
Raised in Wexford, Pennsylvania, Keiser developed a strong connection to the outdoors early in life. Today, that connection continues through his work with the Misingwa Land Trust, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting, preserving, and remediating lands along the Little Beaver Creek watershed.
“Western Pennsylvania has a natural heritage that is worth protecting,” said Keiser. “These landscapes are part of our communities, our history, and our responsibility to future generations.”
Keiser believes local conservation efforts are essential because they focus on the places people know and use every day. While national environmental issues often receive broad attention, he says meaningful progress often begins closer to home.
“Some of the most important conservation work happens at the local level,” said Keiser. “It happens when landowners, volunteers, nonprofits, and community members work together around a shared goal.”
Through his role with the Misingwa Land Trust, Keiser supports efforts to preserve natural spaces, protect waterways, and encourage responsible stewardship across the region. The organization’s work along the Little Beaver Creek watershed reflects a broader mission: to help safeguard land and water resources that support both ecological health and community well-being.
For Keiser, land preservation is not only about protecting open space. It is also about maintaining the character and quality of life that make Western Pennsylvania distinct.
“When we protect land, we are also protecting a way of life,” he said. “We are protecting places where families spend time outdoors, where wildlife can thrive, and where communities can remain connected to the natural world.”
Keiser’s commitment to conservation is shaped by his lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. As an avid outdoorsman, he understands the practical and personal value of preserving natural environments. His work in conservation also reflects lessons from his football career, including discipline, teamwork, and long-term commitment.
“Football taught me that lasting results come from consistent effort,” said Keiser. “Conservation is no different. It requires patience, planning, and people who are willing to stay committed over time.”
Before his work in conservation and entrepreneurship, Keiser played college football at Stanford University and later competed in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, San Diego Chargers, and Arizona Cardinals. While his athletic career brought him national recognition, Keiser says his current work is driven by impact rather than attention.
“As I have gotten older, I have become more focused on what lasts,” he said. “Preserving land is one of those things. It can benefit people long after the work is done.”
Keiser believes Western Pennsylvania is well-positioned to become a stronger example of community-based conservation. He points to the region’s natural beauty, history, and strong local identity as reasons why preservation efforts matter.
“This region has given a lot to the people who live here,” said Keiser. “Protecting it is one way we can give something back.”
Looking ahead, Keiser hopes more residents, businesses, and local leaders will recognize the value of supporting land preservation efforts. He believes conservation does not need to be complicated to be meaningful. It starts with awareness, participation, and respect for the land.
“Everyone has a role to play,” he said. “Whether that means volunteering, supporting a local organization, or simply being more aware of how we use natural spaces, small actions can contribute to a larger impact.”
As development pressures and environmental concerns continue to shape conversations across the country, Keiser is encouraging Western Pennsylvania communities to take a practical, long-term view.
“The choices we make today will shape what future generations inherit,” he said. “That is why preservation matters. It is not just about protecting land. It is about protecting community, identity, and legacy.”
