The family-friendly event will also feature snacks, activities, and giveaways while helping ease back-to-school costs.

This year’s giveaway will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at EXPO New Mexico (300 San Pedro Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108). To help students start the school year off right, 1,000 FREE backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 4:00 p.m. while supplies last. Students must be present to receive a backpack.
To make the day even more special, the indoor event will feature fun activities, complimentary snacks, and Lerner and Rowe swag for attendees while supplies last.
Back-to-school costs continue to place a significant financial strain on New Mexico households. Nationwide, families spent an average of $858 per household on back-to-school essentials for the 2025–2026 school year, according to the National Retail Federation. That burden is even more pronounced in New Mexico, where the U.S. Census Bureau reports a child poverty rate of 22.6%. In Albuquerque Public Schools, more than half of students meet federal income guidelines for economic assistance, reflecting widespread financial need. For many households already managing rising everyday expenses, a free backpack filled with school supplies helps ease the burden of preparing for a new school year.

For 2026, Lerner and Rowe will distribute 6,250 total backpacks filled with school supplies across seven cities nationwide, including Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Phoenix (East and West Valley), Yuma, Tucson, and Northwest Indiana. Albuquerque serves as the first stop on this year’s tour.
