A heartwarming tale that transforms fear into curiosity while teaching young readers about the fascinating world of crickets.
Children’s author Deb Snyder-Sudduth is proud to announce the release of her delightful new book, Cricket Story, a beautifully illustrated children’s story that blends entertaining storytelling with educational insights about one of nature’s most misunderstood insects.
In Cricket Story, readers meet Dean, a young boy whose peaceful bedtime is interrupted by the persistent chirping of a cricket hidden somewhere in his room. What begins as frustration and fear quickly becomes a journey of discovery when Dean and his mother learn more about crickets and their important role in nature. As Dean’s curiosity grows, he embarks on a mission to find, care for and better understand his new cricket companion, whom he names Jake.
More than just a charming bedtime story, Cricket Story introduces children to real scientific facts about crickets, including their behaviors, habitats, life cycles and unique methods of communication. Through Dean’s experiences, young readers are encouraged to appreciate the natural world, develop empathy for living creatures and understand the value of responsible pet care.
“Cricket Story was inspired by the wonder that can emerge when children replace fear with curiosity,” says author Deb Snyder-Sudduth. “I wanted to create a story that not only entertains but also helps children develop a deeper appreciation for nature and the small creatures that share our world.”
The book’s engaging narrative is complemented by vibrant illustrations that bring Dean’s adventure to life, making it an ideal choice for:
- Children ages 4–9
- Parents seeking educational bedtime stories
- Elementary school classrooms
- Libraries and literacy programs
- Homeschool families
- Nature and animal enthusiasts
Throughout the story, readers learn valuable life lessons about patience, responsibility, kindness and letting go when it’s time to allow nature to take its course. Dean’s relationship with Jake demonstrates that even the smallest creatures can inspire meaningful connections and unforgettable learning experiences.
About the Author
Deb Snyder-Sudduth has spent her entire life in Indiana. Born in Decatur, she has also lived in New Haven and Fort Wayne. Throughout her career, Deb worked at Fort Wayne National Bank, helped run her parents' coffee shop alongside her brother Chris and later served as a bookkeeper for the bank.
Today, Deb lives on a small farm surrounded by fields where crickets provide a nightly serenade. Her inspiration for Cricket Story came from a memorable family moment when her mother, Jean, became alarmed after a cricket found its way into her home. What began as a humorous encounter sparked the idea for a heartwarming children's story that blends adventure, education and an appreciation for the natural world.
Through Cricket Story, Deb hopes to encourage young readers to look beyond their fears, embrace curiosity and discover the wonder that can be found in even the smallest creatures.
