What Happened?

Shares of digital infrastructure provider Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) fell 5.2% in the afternoon session after Rothschild & Co Redburn initiated coverage of the company with a Neutral rating and a $22 price target, adding to caution ahead of earnings.

According to TipRanks, Redburn analyst Alex Haissl started coverage with Neutral and a $22 target, flagging execution, power, and pipeline-conversion risks. TipRanks / The Fly reported that Jones Trading analyst Kevin Dede separately initiated coverage with a Buy rating and a $70 price target, citing Applied Digital’s shift toward AI datacenters and investment-grade customers.

The conflicting Street views weighed on the stock ahead of the company’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 results, scheduled for October 8, even as peers in digital infrastructure also faced broader rate and inflation pressure.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Applied Digital? Access our full analysis report here, it’s free.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Applied Digital’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 99 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 11 days ago when the stock gained 6.8% on the news that Wells Fargo initiated coverage of the company with an Overweight rating and named the stock a top idea. According to TipRanks, the firm cited 1.4 gigawatts of contracted capacity and a power-advantaged footprint as key supports for the call. An Overweight rating typically means the analyst expects the shares to outperform peers over the firm’s investment horizon. For a capital-intensive data-center builder, contracted power and capacity can make future revenue more visible — which is why a bullish initiation can lift the stock even when options markets still price volatility.

Applied Digital is down 11.8% since the beginning of the year, and at $24.79 per share, it is trading 50.1% below its 52-week high of $49.65 from May 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Applied Digital’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,005.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
