What Happened?

Shares of mediterranean fast-casual restaurant chain CAVA (NYSE: CAVA) jumped 3.8% in the afternoon session after cooling wholesale food inflation provided a favorable macroeconomic tailwind, amplifying the momentum from the company's strong second-quarter earnings report.

The broader restaurant sector caught a bid today after a government report indicated a cooling in wholesale food inflation, a key input cost for the industry. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Producer Price Index (PPI) for processed foods and feeds fell by 0.5 percent in July. A decrease in this index suggests falling input costs, paving the way for improved profit margins across the sector even as consumers become more price-sensitive.

For CAVA Group (NYSE: CAVA), this macroeconomic boost added fuel to a highly impressive quarterly performance. The Mediterranean-style chain reported total revenue of $368.4 million, a 31.3% year-over-year increase that comfortably beat analyst estimates. This top-line surge was driven by robust same-restaurant sales growth of 9%, underpinned by a 5.3% increase in foot traffic—a stark contrast to the broader industry's struggles with declining footfall. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $54.72 million, generating a strong 14.9% margin and beating estimates by 4.1%, while GAAP EPS reached $0.19.

Management credited this momentum to its rapidly growing loyalty program, new menu additions like its Pomegranate Glazed Salmon, and consistent new restaurant productivity that exceeds 100%. While the company's full-year EBITDA guidance of $186 million at the midpoint came in slightly below the $190.6 million estimate—reflecting prudent assumptions around recent industry-wide food safety concerns and investments in team member wages—investors remained focused on CAVA's exceptional traffic growth, expanding 476-location footprint, and the improved margin outlook provided by falling wholesale food costs.

The shares closed the day at $72.20, up 3.9% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

CAVA’s shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 1 day ago when the stock gained 12.8% on the news that the company reported second-quarter results that beat analyst estimates for revenue and earnings, driven by strong sales growth. The Mediterranean fast-casual chain's revenue climbed 31.3% year-over-year to $368.4 million, surpassing the consensus estimate of $359.7 million. A key factor in the beat was a 9% increase in same-restaurant sales, which outpaced expectations. The company also posted diluted earnings per share of $0.19, edging out projections of $0.18. However, the company's full-year guidance for adjusted EBITDA came in at $186 million at the midpoint, slightly below Wall Street's forecast of $190.6 million. Investors seemingly focused on the strong current performance, which caught some short-sellers by surprise and contributed to the stock's upward movement.

CAVA is up 18.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $71.63 per share, it is still trading 26.5% below its 52-week high of $97.39 from April 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of CAVA’s shares at the IPO in June 2023 would now be looking at an investment worth $1,636.
