What Happened?

Shares of genetic testing company Natera (NASDAQ: NTRA) jumped 1.7% in the morning session after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted Breakthrough Device designation to its blood-based multi-cancer early detection assay.

The regulatory decision followed the agency's evaluation of performance data spanning 12 cancer types. The evaluation assessed the assay's sensitivity, specificity, and cancer signal origin performance. The FDA Breakthrough Devices Program is designed to expedite the development and review of medical devices that diagnose or treat life-threatening conditions. In diagnostic testing, sensitivity reflects how accurately a test detects positive cases, while specificity measures its ability to identify negative results.

Cancer signal origin evaluates the test's ability to pinpoint the tissue or organ where cancer originated.

The shares were trading at $400.22, up 2.2% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Natera’s shares are quite volatile and have had 18 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 17 days ago when the stock gained 5.2% on the news that the company announced that Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency granted regulatory approval for its Signatera test as a companion diagnostic in muscle-invasive bladder cancer. The approval enables the Signatera test to serve as a companion diagnostic to guide adjuvant atezolizumab treatment decisions for individuals with muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

Following the regulatory clearance from Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency, Natera announced that it plans to proceed with a commercial launch in Japan in the first half of 2027.

Natera is up 74.9% since the beginning of the year, and at $400.22 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $425.64 from October 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Natera’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $3,583.
