Value investing has produced some of the world’s most famous investing billionaires, including Warren Buffett, David Einhorn, and Seth Klarman, who built their fortunes by purchasing wonderful businesses at reasonable prices. But these hidden gems are few and far between - many stocks that appear cheap often stay that way because they face structural issues.

Identifying genuine bargains from value traps is something many investors struggle with, which is why we started StockStory - to help you find the best companies. Keeping that in mind, here are three value stocks with poor fundamentals and some alternatives you should consider instead.

Integra LifeSciences (IART)

Forward P/E Ratio: 5.3x

Founded in 1989 as a pioneer in regenerative medicine technology, Integra LifeSciences (NASDAQ: IART) develops and manufactures medical technologies for neurosurgery, wound care, and surgical reconstruction, including regenerative tissue products and surgical instruments.

Why Do We Pass on IART?

  1. Absence of organic revenue growth over the past two years suggests it may have to lean into acquisitions to drive its expansion
  2. Incremental sales over the last five years were much less profitable as its earnings per share fell by 4.5% annually while its revenue grew
  3. High net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 5× could force the company to raise capital on unfavorable terms if market conditions deteriorate

Integra LifeSciences’s stock price of $11.94 implies a valuation ratio of 5.3x forward P/E. Check out our free in-depth research report to learn more about why IART doesn’t pass our bar.

Baxter (BAX)

Forward P/E Ratio: 12.3x

With a history dating back to 1931 and products used in over 100 countries, Baxter International (NYSE: BAX) provides essential healthcare products including dialysis therapies, IV solutions, infusion systems, surgical products, and patient monitoring technologies to hospitals and clinics worldwide.

Why Do We Steer Clear of BAX?

  1. Constant currency growth was below our standards over the past two years, suggesting it might need to invest in product improvements to get back on track
  2. Earnings per share decreased by more than its revenue over the last five years, showing each sale was less profitable
  3. Negative returns on capital show that some of its growth strategies have backfired

Baxter is trading at $25.33 per share, or 12.3x forward P/E. To fully understand why you should be careful with BAX, check out our full research report (it’s free).

World Kinect (WKC)

Forward P/E Ratio: 13.2x

Serving over 150,000 customers from commercial jets to cargo ships to heating oil consumers, World Kinect (NYSE: WKC) procures and delivers fuel and energy products to airlines, shipping companies, trucking fleets, and industrial businesses worldwide.

Why Are We Bearish on WKC?

  1. Gross margin of 2.3% reflects its high production costs and unfavorable asset base
  2. Low free cash flow margin of 0.3% for the last five years gives it little breathing room, constraining its ability to self-fund growth or return capital to shareholders

At $36.54 per share, World Kinect trades at 13.2x forward P/E. Read our free research report to see why you should think twice about including WKC in your portfolio.
