Altruism Counseling Services Clears Up Confusion on DUI Class Length in Kentucky

Lexington, KY – Altruism Counseling Services takes an in-depth look at the length of DUI classes in Kentucky. In the state, DUI classes last for a minimum of 20 hours and are taken over three weekends. The first step to taking them is to be assessed by a certified DUI assessor. This assessment will determine if a person needs 20 hours of DUI education classes, alcohol and substance use treatment, or a combination of both. DUI classes typically start every five to six weeks. Classes typically take place on Friday evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons, for two weeks. The final class is generally on the third Friday evening. This schedule allows someone to keep their normal schedule during the work week.

“In the state of Kentucky, the approved classes for DUI are what’s called, ‘Prime for Life (PRI)’ classes. PRI is a 20-hour psychoeducation course that is designed to help attendees gain an understanding of how alcohol and substance disorders develop and how you can prevent them. Other information that can help you make informed decisions when it comes to the consumption of alcohol and other substances will also be provided,” the blog post states.

In Kentucky, after a first offense of a DUI, people are typically required to complete a 90-day treatment program alongside their DUI classes. After the second or more offense, it is a year of attending a treatment program. A certified instructor always leads DUI classes and includes media-rich presentations developed from over 1,800 research studies over 75 years. During the classes, people will have a corresponding workbook to complete to ensure that the material is comprehended and that they can demonstrate understanding to pass the class.

Prime For Life classes are divided into three units: Exploration Unit in DUI Classes, Reflection Unit in DUI Classes, and Protection Unit in DUI Classes. The first unit helps people learn about the perception of personal risk. This means that people will learn the difference between how they feel or think in situations when they are intoxicated versus the reality of the situation and the dangers that might occur to themselves or others. The second unit teaches people more about the consumption of alcohol and other substances and when it stops being casual and starts to become a use disorder. This unit will also teach about the warning signs of developing an alcohol or substance use disorder. The third unit teaches people about the personal changes they can make after they have completed the class. They will have the opportunity to work with the instructor and create a plan of action.

Two main techniques are used in DUI Classes: motivational interviewing and transtheoretical model techniques. Motivational interviewing helps people develop a conscious awareness of why they want to change their lives. The transtheoretical model of change helps people move through the distinct stages when making a behavioral change. These stages are pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation to make the change, action, and maintenance. It is important to note that online DUI classes are not accepted in Kentucky. Some states do allow them, but Kentucky is not one of them. All DUI services must be conducted by a certified DUI program provider and licensed Alcohol and Drug Entity (AODE).

“Once you have completed the required class, you are one step closer to getting your license back. While completing the class does not make your suspension end sooner, not completing the class may cause your suspension to be extended. If you have completed your DUI classes as part of the requirements for your first offense, you may still need to complete additional requirements like paying your fine of $200-$500 and waiting for the end of your suspension to get your license back – which may last as long as 90 days,” the blog post continues.
