Shawna L. Stevens PLLC Brings 20+ Years of Family Law Experience to New Fredericksburg Office — And It Doesn’t Look Like Any Law Office You’ve Been In Before

-- Walk through the door of Shawna L. Stevens PLLC on Lafayette Blvd in Fredericksburg and the first thing you notice isn’t a reception desk stacked with legal files or the hum of fluorescent lighting. It’s an accent wall — and mounted on it, glowing in neon, is the firm’s logo. Bold, unexpected, and completely unforgettable. Before anyone says a word, you already know you’ve stepped into a different kind of law office. On some afternoons, there’s music playing from a record player nearby. It’s that kind of place.

That was entirely intentional.

“I wanted people to walk in and feel like they could breathe,” said Shawna L. Stevens, the firm’s founder and principal attorney. “People who come to see a family law attorney are usually going through one of the hardest times of their lives. The last thing they need is to sit in a cold, intimidating waiting room.”

The atmosphere reflects something deeper about how Stevens approaches her work. She has been practicing family law in the Fredericksburg area for more than two decades — long enough to understand that how a client feels walking through the door matters just as much as the legal strategy waiting on the other side of it.

How She Got Here

Shawna graduated summa cum laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2003 — President’s Achievement Award recipient, Managing Editor of the Law Review, Chair of the Mock Trial Board, and named the WLAM Foundation Outstanding Woman Law Student that year. Strong credentials. But she wasn’t in a rush to put her name on a door.

Over the next 16 years, she worked through several well-regarded Virginia firms — first as an associate, eventually as a partner. That time in larger practices taught her how complex family law cases are built, argued, and won. It also showed her what a smaller, more personal practice could offer that bigger firms often couldn’t.

In 2019, she launched Shawna L. Stevens PLLC.

“No two families are the same, and no two cases should be handled the same way. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to every single day,” she said. “When you hire this firm, you get a team that is genuinely invested in your outcome — and you always have direct access to me.”

Last year, the firm moved to its current location at 307 Lafayette Blvd, Suite 200 — a space Shawna designed from the ground up to feel less like a law office and more like somewhere a person could actually sit down, think clearly, and talk honestly about what they’re going through.

Supporting that vision is legal assistant Claudia Escobar, who plays an integral role in the day-to-day experience of every client who walks through the door. “Claudia is a huge part of what makes this firm work,” Stevens said. “Clients feel that from the moment they interact with her.”

What the Firm Handles

The practice focuses exclusively on family law. No criminal cases, no personal injury, no distractions. Just family law, every day, for clients across Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, and Caroline counties.

• Divorce and separation — both contested and uncontested

• Child custody and visitation

• Child and spousal support — initial orders and modifications

• Military divorce and family law

• Property and asset division

• Protective orders

• Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements

• Adoption

Military Families Are a Priority

The Fredericksburg corridor has a large military population — Quantico is nearby, Fort Belvoir isn’t far, and a significant number of the firm’s clients are active duty servicemembers, veterans, or military spouses.

Military divorces carry a layer of complexity that standard family law cases don’t. Pension division under federal law, custody arrangements built around deployments and PCS moves, benefits questions that hinge on years of service — these aren’t issues every family law attorney is comfortable handling. Stevens has spent years developing that expertise.

“Servicemembers and their families sacrifice everything for this country,” she said. “The least we can do is make sure they have an attorney in their corner who fights just as hard for them at home as they fight abroad.”
