Marquis Who's Who Honors Dr. Sinisa Dovat, MD, PhD, for Expertise in Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / August 25, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Dr. Sinisa Dovat, MD, PhD, for expertise in pediatrics, hematology and oncology. Dr. Dovat has 25 years of experience in the medical field and has dedicated his life to pediatric hematology and oncology research.

About Dr. Sinisa Dovat

Dr. Dovat is currently a professor of pediatrics, biochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He is also the director of translational research and development of therapeutics for Four Diamonds Pediatric Cancer Research Center at Penn State College of Medicine.

Dr. Dovat received a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Novi Sad in Serbia in 1988. His career with Penn State College started in 2010 and remains integral to the staff.

Notable Work in Cell Disparity

Dr. Dovat and his team are currently focusing on cell disparity in pediatric leukemia, which affects children of Hispanic/Latino origin more than other groups. This research is new, as are the discoveries and treatments being made.

"We discovered one of the reasons for the disparity. The discovery identified that the mutation of the gene called IKZF1, which conquers high-risk leukemia, occurs most frequently in children with leukemia who are of Hispanic/Latino origin," Dr. Dovat explains.

This notable achievement was published by Dr. Dovat several years ago, and the team is now working on improving the diagnosis of high-risk leukemia while developing a targeted treatment to reduce cell disparity. This possible development would benefit not only children of Hispanic/Latino origin but also children with high-risk leukemia.

The research Dr. Dovat and his team are working on is driven by the urgency of the devastating impact of disease on children. Dr. Dovat believes that no parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child.

"I want to make a difference. I want to transition discoveries of basic classification or research into clinical practice. I'm a physician-scientist and working in both worlds: high-tech research and patients. It gives me the opportunity to not only make discoveries but also translate them into clinical practice," Dr. Dovat says.

A Dedication to Making Positive Impacts

Dr. Dovat continues to build on his current achievements to effect positive changes. Among his goals is discovering new treatments for cancer, including developing new drugs. He not only wants to find a cure for cancer but discover how to prevent it.

The survival rate for children with cancer is around 80%, but Dr. Dovat wants to make sure that the survivors can also lead productive lives after they are cured. This has compelled him to research the long-term impact of chemotherapy on the brain functions of cancer survivors as well as their other organs.

Dr. Dovat is dedicated to mentoring others and established the Clinician-Scientist Faulty Mentoring (FaMe) program, which aims to equip clinical scientists with the skills they need to conduct independent research.

The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) awarded Dr. Dovat the Young Investigator Award as an assistant professor. He appeared on the list of Best Doctors in America from 2008 to 2011 and, in 2023, received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Woodward Center for Excellence in Health Sciences Education.
