“On automotive business, the year started on a soft note in Q1, followed by robust inventory replenishment in Q2 and Q3, as certain panel makers accelerated IC purchases to meet surging orders from Chinese automakers expanding overseas. In Q4, however, shortly after China’s National Day holidays in early October, we saw a sudden and sizable decline in demand among the customers that had purchased aggressively in prior quarters. We believe the recent significant reduction in our Q4 forecasts reflect in part Chinese automakers’ earlier, overly aggressive export expectations, along with their growing concerns over inventory levels across distribution channels. By contrast, panel makers primarily serving non-China customers have maintained steady forecasts, with some posting slight sequential increases in their fourth quarter orders,” said Mr. Jordan Wu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Himax.

Revenue growth

Reviewing a company’s long-term revenue performance reveals insights into its quality. Even a bad business can perform well for one or two quarters, but a high-quality one grows for years. Over the last five years, Himax’s demand was weak and its revenue declined by 8.6% per year, falling short of our standards and suggesting poor business quality. Semiconductors are a cyclical industry, and long-term investors should be prepared for periods of high growth followed by periods of revenue contractions.

Himax quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but short-term results matter for semiconductors because the rapid pace of technological innovation (Moore’s Law) could make yesterday’s hit product obsolete today. Himax’s annualized revenue declines of 1.2% over the last two years suggest its demand continued shrinking. Himax year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, Himax’s year-on-year revenue growth of 23.9% was strong, and its $246.8 million of revenue was in line with Wall Street’s consensus estimates.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 37.2% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, an improvement versus the last two years. This projection is above average for the sector and implies its newer products and services will spur better top-line performance.

Product demand & outstanding inventory

Days inventory outstanding, or DIO, is an important metric for chipmakers, as it reflects a business’s capital intensity and the cyclical nature of semiconductor supply and demand. In a tight supply environment, inventories tend to be stable, allowing chipmakers to exert pricing power. Steadily increasing DIO can be a warning sign that demand is weak, and if inventories continue to rise, the company may have to downsize production.

This quarter, Himax’s DIO came in at 90, which is 34 days below its five-year average. At the moment, these numbers show no indication of an excessive inventory buildup.
