The service lets prospective patients discuss their options, including the deep plane facelift, without an initial two-hour drive to the practice’s Eugene surgical center. The expansion mirrors broader adoption of telehealth across surgical specialties, where video appointments are increasingly used for initial consultations and candidacy assessment.
“Telehealth lets us begin the conversation with Portland-area patients before they invest in travel,” said Dr. Kiya Movassaghi, founder and director of Movassaghi Plastic Surgery. “Patients can understand their options and their candidacy first, then plan an in-person visit when the timing is right. This is an option for all out-of-town patients, but we have found that it is especially well-suited for facelift patients’ initial consultation.”
Kiya Movassaghi, MD, DMD, FACS is a Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon and past president of The Aesthetic Society. He serves as a clinical assistant professor of plastic surgery at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland and has performed facial rejuvenation surgery for more than 20 years. He offers expertise in face, breast, and body cosmetic surgery, including the popular deep plane facelift.
The deep plane facelift repositions deeper facial tissues, including muscle and fat, as a single structural unit rather than tightening skin alone—an approach that calls for specialized surgical training.
“Patients increasingly ask for the deep plane facelift by name, and I tell them that the label matters far less than the surgeon performing it,” said Dr. Movassaghi. “Two surgeons can follow the same technical steps and reach very different results, so what I encourage patients to weigh is training, judgment, and experience. A virtual consultation is a low-pressure way to begin the conversation.”
Dr. Movassaghi has also introduced a three-level classification system that aligns each patient’s goals with their specific anatomy, from the neck to the lower face to the area beneath the eyes, and that framework helps to facilitate the conversation during virtual consultations, as well.
“I don’t perform facelifts the same way that I did 20 years ago,” explained Dr. Movassaghi. “There are many advancements that I’ve incorporated into my practice in order to achieve lasting results that look very natural. I continue to refine my techniques by collaborating with colleagues, attending national meetings, and critiquing my own clinical outcomes. Every facelift patient receives a surgical plan that merges that knowledge with their own personal concerns and goals.”
Portland-area patients have historically traveled roughly two hours to Eugene for an initial consultation. A secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual consultation now lets them review their candidacy and treatment options remotely. The practice uses Nextech Telehealth, a system integrated with its electronic medical records. Appointments typically last 20 to 30 minutes and address areas of concern, candidacy, timing, and treatment options. Patients who proceed with surgery receive in-person examination and follow-up care at the Eugene facility, an accredited surgical center.
