Thomas N. Scheffel & Associates, P.C. announced today that it has formally added criminal law to its established practice areas as part of a broader strategic expansion planned for 2025. This development supports the firm’s initiative to deepen its litigation capabilities and respond to increased demand from referral partners and communities across the region. The new criminal law practice is now in effect and will serve individuals facing charges at municipal, state, or federal levels.
Founded in 1983, the firm has long maintained a multidisciplinary practice focused on civil, business, and family law matters. The addition of criminal law reflects an operational assessment conducted as the firm prepared to extend its services into three additional counties. Leadership determined that incorporating criminal defense into its offerings would enable the firm to provide more comprehensive support across a wider range of legal issues.
The practice will be led in significant part by attorney Stephen T. Scheffel, whose background includes more than five years of service as a Deputy District Attorney in Colorado’s First Judicial District. During his tenure as a prosecutor, he handled thousands of cases, including traffic matters, misdemeanor and felony assaults, sexual assaults, and homicides. His experience evaluating cases from the prosecution side informs his approach to criminal defense in private practice, giving him insight into how charging decisions are made and how prosecutors evaluate negotiations.
“Stephen’s experience is an important factor in our decision to formally expand into criminal law,” said Thom Scheffel, Founder of Thomas N. Scheffel & Associates, P.C. “His years with the District Attorney’s Office provide a strong foundation for clients who need informed guidance during challenging circumstances. His familiarity with courtroom processes and case evaluation enhances our team’s ability to support individuals throughout each stage of the legal process.”
While Stephen’s work spans criminal defense, civil litigation, and domestic relations, his prosecutorial background strengthens the firm’s ability to assess criminal matters with clarity from the outset. His role within the practice group includes case evaluation, litigation strategy development, and ongoing collaboration with attorneys and staff assigned to individual cases. The firm emphasized that all criminal matters will continue to be managed using its long-standing team-based model, which pairs each client with personnel suited to the specific needs of the case.
The addition of criminal law also supports the firm’s ongoing plans to update referral protocols for lead providers and community partners. These updates will introduce streamlined processes for routing criminal cases to the firm, ensuring that individuals seeking representation receive timely communication and consistent information. According to Scheffel, the structural adjustments are intended to improve accessibility as the firm increases its regional presence.
“Our goal is to offer clear, coordinated legal support at a time when individuals are often facing significant uncertainty,” Scheffel said. “By integrating criminal law into our practice, we are strengthening the continuity of service we can provide and reinforcing our commitment to practical, dependable representation. This expansion aligns with the principles that have guided our firm for more than four decades.”
The firm has updated its website to include information about the criminal law practice and will continue adding resources throughout the year. Visitors can review general descriptions of the firm’s services, including litigation, domestic relations, and other established practice areas.

The firm expects that the integration of criminal law will contribute to its long-term strategy of serving clients across diverse legal needs while maintaining a consistent, team-oriented approach. As the new practice area develops, leadership anticipates strengthened relationships with referral partners and broader access to legal resources for individuals seeking representation.
