ALEXANDRIA, United States - September 12, 2026 - Menswear label Wolf vs Goat builds alteration room into its tailored trousers on purpose. They ship with the inseam cut long and the hem left open, and on the cotton wool corduroy the waistband is fully tailored, so it can be taken in or let out later rather than being fixed at manufacture.
The argument is that a trouser a wearer can change outlasts one they cannot. Ready-to-wear treats a finished hem and a closed waistband as marks of a completed garment. The label treats both as decisions taken too early, by a factory working from an average rather than a person.
"A hem is the measurement on a trouser that cannot be corrected once it is cut too short," said Mauro Farinelli, founder of Wolf vs Goat. "We can cut the rise, the seat and the leg to a pattern we believe in. The last inch belongs to the person wearing them and to whatever shoes they actually own."
What ships, and what can still be changed
The tailored trousers leave with a 36-inch unfinished inseam. That is long enough to serve almost any wearer, and it is deliberately a length to be shortened rather than one that might need letting down, because a hem cut short cannot be recovered.

Both decisions ask more of the wearer at the point of purchase, because a trouser that arrives unfinished needs a tailor before it can be worn, and both cost the label sales it would otherwise close on the day.
"We would rather sell someone one pair they keep altering than three pairs they replace," Farinelli said. "It is a worse business on the first sale and a better one after that."
Why the hem is the measurement that has to wait
Break, the fold that appears at the front of the leg where the hem meets the top of the shoe, is the visible result of hem length. It is not a fixed measurement. It moves with the wearer's height, with the rise the trousers are cut to, with the width of the leg opening, and with the shoe.
A pair finished to a standard inseam therefore reads correctly on a narrow band of people and slightly wrong on everyone else, and the ones it reads wrong on have no way back.
