Seolhee: Making K-Culture More Accessible through Tattoos

By: Get News

At Hongdam Studio in Seoul, one of Korea’s most esteemed tattoo studios, Seolhee (Instagram ID, @seolheetattoo) stands out as a tattoo artist whose work uniquely merges the rich traditions of Korean culture with elements of animation and fantasy. Her innovative approach has garnered both national and international recognition, solidifying her position as one of the leading artists in the tattoo industry.

Seolhee’s artistic journey is deeply intertwined with her respect for Korean heritage and her interactions with a diverse clientele. “There’s a vast difference between Western and Korean cultures, and I find that embracing these differences broadens my artistic perspective. My goal is to infuse these cultural nuances into my designs, allowing those who see my tattoos to feel connected to these emotions,” she says.

Her passion for Korean traditions is evident not only in her work but also in her personal life, where she draws inspiration from hanbok, historical landmarks, and literature. “Conversations with clients who appreciate tradition, along with my own explorations of historical sites and exhibitions, are fundamental to my creative process,” she explains. This dedication to blending the old with the new is a hallmark of her work. “I strive to make Korean culture and its traditions more accessible and engaging through my art,” she adds.

Seolhee’s ability to intertwine tradition with fantasy gives her tattoos a distinctive quality that resonates deeply with her clients. Her designs often incorporate Eastern symbolism, creating a comforting yet inspiring aesthetic. “I want my tattoos to bring a sense of warmth from tradition while also sparking dreams and hope, even if just for a moment,” she reflects.

Among her many designs, her freehand plum blossom tattoos are particularly sought after. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, drawn directly onto the client’s skin. “Plum blossoms are a favorite of mine, and they hold deep meaning for both me and my clients. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see how these designs resonate with others,” she notes. Her reputation has grown so significantly that many clients travel from abroad specifically to receive a tattoo from her.

Seolhee’s path to becoming a tattoo artist was paved by her early passion for traditional Korean art. “I majored in Korean painting at an art high school, where I immersed myself in the rich traditions of Korea. Initially, I aspired to become a hanbok designer and bring Korean painting to a global audience,” she recalls.

However, as she navigated the challenges of pursuing a career in Korean painting, she discovered tattoo art through the work of Hongdam on Instagram. This encounter was pivotal, leading her to seek out Hongdam as a mentor and marking the beginning of her tattooing career. “Approaching him was a crucial moment for me, driven by a deep passion for this art form,” she shares.

Looking to the future, Seolhee envisions expanding her influence beyond the world of tattoos. “I hope to promote hanbok, which has always been a childhood dream, and live a life enriched with Eastern traditions. My aim is to inspire others with dreams and hope, and to make a meaningful impact through continuous learning, challenges, and innovation,” she states.

At Hongdam Studio, Seolhee actively champions Korean culture through her tattoo designs, incorporating traditional elements such as hanbok, palaces, and seasonal motifs. By engaging with clients who are curious about Korean culture, she educates them on the historical significance behind these elements, making her tattoos a bridge between the past and the present.

Her social media presence serves as a powerful platform to showcase her artwork and provide insights into Korean cultural themes, attracting a global following eager to learn more about Korea. Seolhee’s work has earned her significant recognition both in Korea and abroad. She served as a judge at The Toronto Tattoo Show / NIX #24 in June 2024, where she shared her expertise and gained further insight into the global tattoo community. “Participating as a judge at international conventions has deepened my understanding of the industry and my own work. It’s been an invaluable experience,” she reflects.

In addition to her recent appearance at the Mummy International Tattoo Expo in August 2024, she will also be judging at the Constanta International Tattoo Convention and the Metz Tattoo Expo. Her work at Hongdam Studio continues to flourish, drawing an ever-growing number of clients and earning numerous accolades. Seolhee’s journey, firmly rooted in Korean tradition while exploring the realms of fantasy, continues to captivate and inspire those who experience her art.
