Walmart opened its fifth next-generation fulfillment center in Stockton, California.

The new facility represents the latest step in Walmart’s transformation of its supply chain, bringing associates together with advanced automation, technology and machine learning to move products faster and more efficiently. The technology enables Walmart to materially improve storage capacity and increase the number of customer orders the facility can fulfill each day compared with a traditional fulfillment center.

Strategically located in California’s Central Valley, the Stockton facility adds significant fulfillment capacity closer to West Coast customers, helping Walmart expand faster shipping options on millions of items while strengthening its broader store and fulfillment network.

“This is an exciting day for Stockton and a significant investment in our community,” said Timm Quinn, CEO, Stockton Chamber of Commerce. “Walmart’s new fulfillment center will create more than 1,000 jobs, bring new career opportunities to our residents and strengthen Stockton’s position as a hub for innovation and economic growth in the Central Valley. We’re proud to welcome Walmart and look forward to the lasting impact this investment will have on Stockton and the broader San Joaquin County region.”

Increased Order Capacity, Faster Shipping
The high-tech facility features an automated, high-density storage and retrieval system that brings products directly to associates, reducing the traditional 12-step fulfillment process to just five steps. The technology reduces repetitive, manual tasks while allowing associates to focus on higher-value work and helping Walmart move orders through the building more efficiently.

“Stockton represents what we mean when we say Walmart is people-led and tech-powered,” said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president, Fulfillment Operations, Walmart U.S. “We’re bringing together associates with advanced technology and automation to create a safer, more efficient operation that can fulfill more orders and get products to customers faster. This facility is an important investment in the Central Valley and a critical part of how we’re building the next generation of Walmart’s fulfillment network across the West Coast.”

Combined with the rest of Walmart’s fulfillment network, these next-generation fulfillment centers will enable the retailer to reach 95% of the U.S. population with next- or two-day shipping. Walmart Fulfillment Services, Walmart’s end-to-end third-party fulfillment service, will also leverage the space to fulfill third-party Marketplace items.

New Career Opportunities
Additional benefits of the advanced technology include new career pathways — and job comfort — for associates. The Stockton fulfillment center will be home to more than 1,000 Walmart associates. The retailer is continuing to hire a variety of positions, including tech-focused jobs, as operations continue to ramp. Each job brings with it a pathway for opportunity at Walmart.

“This facility is about more than the technology inside the building — it’s about the people who bring it to life every day,” said Dean Yoder, general manager, Walmart Fulfillment Center 4091. “We’re building a team of more than 1,000 associates here in Stockton, with opportunities to develop new skills, work with advanced technology and build long-term careers at Walmart. I’m incredibly proud of this team and excited about what we’re building together in the Stockton community.”

Full-time positions qualify for Walmart’s total rewards and benefits plans, including medical, vision and dental insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, stock purchase plan and access to a tuition-paid college degree through Walmart’s Live Better U.
