UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / April 2, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who honors Jill Steinberg for excellence in photography. As the founder of Jill Steinberg Photography LLC, Ms. Steinberg has nearly 20 years of experience as a live-performance photographer. She has photographed opera, music and interdisciplinary performances at venues across the country and internationally. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Time Out New York.

A Photographer Focused on Human Expression
In 1979, Ms. Steinberg earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Temple University, graduating summa cum laude. She began her professional photography in 2006 after years of interest in visual art. Her approach emphasizes capturing authentic emotion from live performances by remaining unobtrusive. "I like to be invisible," she says. "I like to be there up front and close and not have them notice me."
Ms. Steinberg has photographed performances at the Kennedy Center, the Park Avenue Armory, the Barbican Centre in London, International Theater Amsterdam, the Monte Carlo Opera House and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Her work also appears in smaller venues, such as National Sawdust, Pioneer Works and The Juilliard School. Her photographs frequently show musicians and opera performers engaged with audiences.
Leadership in the Arts Community
In addition to her distinguished photography career, Ms. Steinberg has made significant contributions to leadership in the arts community. She serves as president of the board of directors at National Sawdust in Williamsburg, New York. The venue is celebrated for championing composers and emerging talent.
Ms. Steinberg is also board chair and photographer for VisionIntoArt, having been involved with the organization since 2011. Composer Paola Prestini co-founded the nonprofit to create interdisciplinary performances that bridge impact and innovation.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Steinberg served on the board of OPERA America and was a founding board member of Heartbeat Opera. Her civic contributions include support for Waterwell and the National Opera Center. This ongoing involvement in the arts reflects a belief that artistic expression connects communities and encourages dialogue.
Sensorium Ex Spotlights Nonverbal Artists
Among Ms. Steinberg's recent projects is her documentation of the Sensorium Ex opera project. The production, developed by VisionIntoArt, explores disability, communication and artificial intelligence. The work includes disabled and nonverbal performers who are on the autism spectrum.
While photographing rehearsals, workshops and performances, Ms. Steinberg observed participants expressing themselves through facial expressions, body language and movement without spoken words. There is also a focus on performers discovering new ways to communicate with audiences. "Right now, they can type into iPads, and the iPad will speak, but the iPad speaks in a monochromatic voice," she says. "And what we're working on is to get a voice that's his voice."
Accessible Arts Photography
Ms. Steinberg often provides her photography services to arts organizations pro bono. She has two acclaimed photo books, "Invisible Revealed" and "Contemplations", both available for purchase on National Sawdust's website. These purchases are tax-deductible, and all proceeds directly support the VIA IMPACT Lab at National Sawdust. Additionally, she keeps her fees low so emerging artists can access professional images.
Moreover, Ms. Steinberg encourages young photographers to focus on their subjects. "I would say to students, blend into the background so you can capture the true expressions of the performers". In other words, by not drawing attention to themselves, the performance photographer will capture candid emotions and authenticity.
A Lifelong Artistic Mission
Ms. Steinberg's photography and leadership roles reflect a commitment to documenting performances with social significance. Her favorite photograph is of Jessye Norman, who is one of the first African American opera singers. This support reinforces her reputation as both an influential photographer and arts advocate.
At 76, having recently been recognized by the Influential Women organization in 2026, Ms. Steinberg looks forward toworking for many years. She remains active with National Sawdust, VisionIntoArt and the Up Until Now Collective. In these endeavors, she serves as a member and photographer. "I hope that through my work, I can expand people's understanding and acceptance of everyone, emphasizing that we should support one another," she says.
