Rancho Cucamonga has long been known as a safe and family-oriented community. However, recent incidents and emerging crime trends are prompting residents to ask how the city can maintain that standard as it continues to grow.
Rancho Cucamonga City Council candidate David VanGorden, a retired law enforcement officer, says public safety remains one of the most important responsibilities of local government.
In the November election VanGorden will be campaigning against incumbent Kristine Scott in District 2.
“Rancho Cucamonga is a safe city, and that’s something worth protecting,” VanGorden said. “The question is how we make sure it stays that way as the city grows and changes.”
A Changing Landscape
Recent reports, including a shooting at a Rancho Cucamonga apartment complex that left a manager injured, have brought renewed attention to safety concerns in residential areas.
In addition, regional data shows that crime trends across San Bernardino County have shifted in recent years, including increases in certain categories of crime.
While Rancho Cucamonga remains safer than many surrounding areas, residents have begun asking whether resources are keeping pace with the city’s growth.
A Question of Resources
VanGorden says one of the key issues is ensuring that police patrols and public safety resources keep up with population increases and development.
“As the city grows, the demands on law enforcement grow as well,” he said.
“That’s something that needs to be considered in every planning decision.”
Residents have raised questions about:
• the number of patrol officers assigned to the city
• response times
• coverage across expanding neighborhoods
• and how development impacts safety
“These are not political concerns,” VanGorden said.
“They are common-sense public safety questions.”
Looking at the Bigger Picture
Crime trends, like development, evolve over time.
Understanding that timeline is important.
Over the past several years, Rancho Cucamonga has experienced growth in both population and development, while much of the city’s leadership has remained consistent.
VanGorden says this highlights the importance of long-term planning.
“Public safety isn’t something you react to after the fact,” he said. “It’s something you plan for in advance.”
Moving Forward
VanGorden believes maintaining Rancho Cucamonga’s reputation as a safe city requires a proactive approach.
“That means making sure our police resources, infrastructure, and planning decisions all work together,” he said.
He added that residents play an important role by staying engaged and asking questions. VanGorden encourages residents to voice their concerns or submit questions by clicking https://www.vangordenforrancho.com/contact
