The acclaimed jazz musician, entrepreneur, and club owner reveals how one unlikely San Antonio jazz club became a blueprint for bringing people together in an increasingly disconnected world

SAN ANTONIO - Aug. 24, 2026 - PRLog -- At a time when screens, and on demand entertainment are reshaping how people spend their lives, jazz musician and entrepreneur Doc Watkins is making a passionate case for something decidedly analog: a crowded room, a live band, and people enjoying it together.

Watkins' new book, Jazz, TX: A Love Letter to Live Music, Community, and the Little Club That Could, releases August 25, 2026, offering an entertaining and deeply personal look inside the improbable rise of Jazz, TX, the San Antonio club he opened in 2016.

Part memoir, part ode to jazz, and part entrepreneurial playbook, Jazz, TX tells the story of a business that was never supposed to work.

Jazz had become intimidating to many listeners. Traditional jazz clubs were struggling. San Antonio was hardly considered an obvious destination for the genre. Yet Watkins discovered something the industry had largely overlooked: the potential audience for a jazz club was much bigger than the population of people who already considered themselves jazz fans.

The answer was to stop treating jazz like something audiences needed to understand and start treating it like something they could experience.

Music. Food. Cocktails. Dancing. Romance. Hospitality. Community.

The result became San Antonio's signature cultural experience and the foundation for Watkins' growing collection of businesses.

"This is the best business book I have ever read, because it slays all the conventional wisdoms and comes from the heart," said Richard Koch, bestselling author of The 80/20 Principle.

Emmy Award winning Saturday Night Live writer Hugh Fink called the book "genuinely inspiring, deeply engaging, and surprisingly funny," praising Watkins for building "one of the coolest rooms in America."

Those descriptions reflect what makes Jazz, TX unusual. Watkins does not offer a neat formula for entrepreneurship. Instead, he takes readers behind the curtain, through disastrous opening nights, unconventional decisions, business mistakes, personal memories, and the philosophy that made the club work.

At the center of it all is a simple idea: people still need places to be together.

"People need a place to relax, experience joy, sensational music, enjoy great food, and make fabulous memories," Watkins says.

Watkins is a pianist, singer, bandleader, club owner, tech founder, and CEO. He has released ten albums, performs nearly 100 shows a year, opened Houston jazz club Doc's in 2025, and co-founded TurnTable, a ticketing and marketing platform created specifically for jazz clubs.

Jazz, TX will be available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, major booksellers, and select independent retailers beginning August 25, 2026.
