(Matthew Du, NewsUSA Reporter) - The Houston Police is under fire for suspending over 260,000 cases since 2016, citing lack of personnel as the cause. In February 2024, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner announced this statistic. He asserted that he redirected staff to assault report review and other divisions. A month later, Houston Mayor John Whitmire expressed his dissatisfaction with the backlog and suspension of thousands of cases. As such, Mayor Whitmire will launch an independent investigation into the suspended cases and the circumstances that led to their being void.

The review process has not yet started, but Mayor Whitmire assures constituents that he will place his trusted individual on the panel.
