Church of Scientology South Africa headquarters, known as Castle Kyalami, religious leaders from various denominations resolved to collaborate towards combating social ills in 2025. The event’s purpose was to present and discuss impactful humanitarian programs that have already made a difference in communities worldwide, contributing to crime and drug reduction, raising morale and prosperous societies.
-- At a recent conference of societal leaders held at theThe conference was attended by church leaders, members of parliament, government officials from all three spheres of government, academics, business, and civic leaders, all gathered to strategize and identify ways to address key social issues.
Pastor Innocent Mzi Mlambo, national chairperson of the interfaith organization African Spiritual Churches, opened the one-day conference with a prayer and a call for collective action. He emphasized the need for a unified approach to solving pressing issues such as crime, drug and substance abuse, domestic violence, and poverty.
“It is high time we unite churches, government departments, the non-profit sector, and the private sector,” said Pastor Mlambo. “By combining our strengths into one dedicated effort, we can bring practical solutions to these social challenges. I would like to thank all of the clergy, government officials, and leaders who are here today. Your presence shows your commitment to this cause. As church leaders, we are best equipped to drive these efforts, as we are on the ground, understanding firsthand what is needed, and we bring essential components of ethics, morality, and spiritual values to the table.”
These sentiments were echoed by Archbishop Salathiel Moruledi of the Episcopal Reformed Apostolic Church of Southern Africa, who highlighted the challenge of substance abuse, particularly among young people. “In our communities, we have many young people caught in the grip of Nyaope addiction,” said Archbishop Moruledi. “They are without purpose, destroying their own future. This issue affects the entire community, and there is a collective desire to find solutions. However, we lack coordination and effective programs. I address this problem.”
The program continued with an African and global overview of high-impact social and spiritual support programs addressing substance and alcohol abuse, crime prevention, rehabilitation, and gender-based violence. In addition, there was a focus on literacy development, learner support, and leadership programs aimed at community and economic development.
These programs, created by humanitarian and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard and driven by the Church of Scientology in collaboration with various churches and sectors of society, focus on empowering individuals with knowledge and skills to become agents of change within their communities.
Sandile Hlayisi, Spokesperson of the Church of Scientology, spoke on the potential impact of collaboration across different faiths and sectors: “We are excited that these different faith leaders have come together today to develop a shared vision for a better society. The individuals in this room each hold tremendous influence, and if we can coordinate our efforts, we can create exponential positive change. That is the goal we are working towards.”
Archbishop Moruledi shared the positive outcome of the conference: “We are not just inspired but equipped with the tools and programs needed to create change in our communities. My leaders and I have already formed a committee and will begin implementing regular awareness and life skills programs to help the young people struggling with addiction. We are bringing schools, churches, and government agencies into our effort, and we have already scheduled our first activities. The focus now is on action because we know what we need to do.”
