Human rights celebrated at the Church of Scientology event presenting the portrait as well as the importance of art and human rights
-- The Ecuadorian Consulate of New Jersey and Pennsylvania hosted a vibrant celebration for International Migrants Day, honoring the contributions of Ecuadorian immigrants in the United States. The event was attended by community leaders, including Mr. Diego Muñoz, a Hispanic Commissioner from the Newark Mayor's Office.
A highlight of the evening was the speech by Ecuadorian Consul General Hon. Rodrigo Benitez, who underscored the importance of migration in fostering development. “For the United Nations, migration is considered a powerful factor for development that helps achieve its goals,” he said. “Migrants act as bridges between nations, contributing to the prosperity of both their homeland and their new country. And today, we celebrate not only the journeys of our people but the incredible cultural heritage they carry with them.”
The Consul General emphasized the challenges Ecuadorians face, as highlighted by Human Rights Watch, which reported a record-high homicide rate of 25 per 100,000 people in 2022. Despite these hardships, Ecuadorians' resilience and cultural pride remain steadfast.
Ecuadorian artist Maestro Gotasi, a celebrated artist and immigrant, stood as a beacon of hope for his community. Known for his bold and evocative paintings, Gotasi’s works have long portrayed the struggles and triumphs of Ecuadorians navigating the migrant experience.
Maestro Gotasi’s story takes on deeper significance against the backdrop of issues faced by Ecuadorian migrants in the U.S. Many grapple with uncertainties, difficult treks, and limited access to resources, yet their resilience remains. It was noted that Maestro Gotasi’s contributions as a cultural leader in the USA and internationally have become a rallying point for his community, pushing back against the adversity migrants often face.
Maestro Gotasi acknowledged with his art those people who inspired him on his journey and introduced his latest painting: the portrait of artist, humanitarian, and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard. After his visit to the historic L. Ron Hubbard Residence in Bay Head, NJ—where Hubbard wrote the New York Times bestseller Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health—Maestro Gotasi said, “Hubbard’s life of exploration and his profound contributions to understanding the human mind deeply resonated with me,” and I wanted to pay tribute to someone whose work transcends borders and cultures.”
The painting was received by Mr. Massimo Parrino, the President of the Friends of L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, who remarked, “Art has the power to connect people in a way that words sometimes cannot.”
During this occasion, Consul General Hon. Benitez acknowledged the significance of this artistic homage: "To L. Ron Hubbard, who is no longer with us, but whose contributions deserve this honor."
Adding to the evening’s cultural richness was a performance by renowned Latin singer Ms. Pia Vazquez.
The Church of Scientology sponsors the United for Human Rights campaign designed to promote the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which includes a section on artistic rights, “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.”
Events are also held regularly to promote the UDHR ranging from community events to an exhibit in the Nation’s Capital featuring human rights themed art held last month at the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office in Washington, DC, to an annual human rights summit at the United Nations in New York.
