Marquis Who's Who Honors John W. Caldwell III for Excellence in Engineering

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / March 10, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who honors John W. Caldwell III for excellence in engineering, currently serving as the owner and president of Desert Rain Consulting LLC. His decades of service in the oil and gas industry have also earned him recognition as a Top Professional.

A Technical Adviser with Global Reach

Mr. Caldwell has worked in the field of upstream oil and gas for 47 years, spending 14 as the head of Desert Rain Consulting. Additionally, he serves as a technical adviser for Solomon Associates, where he assists energy companies worldwide in identifying data-driven strategies to enhance efficiency.

Before establishing Desert Rain Consulting in 2012, Mr. Caldwell spent five years with ConocoPhillips as an operations adviser and more than 25 years with Burlington Resources. At Burlington, he held several senior roles, including engineering supervisor, production engineer and senior engineering adviser. His work helped identify hundreds of millions of dollars in value, guided basin-wide projects and shaped the development of internal training teams.

A graduate of the University of Idaho, Mr. Caldwell earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering with honors in 1977. Today, he is a licensed professional engineer in Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Landmark Gas Discovery in 1989

Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Caldwell is most proud of helping develop a substantial unconventional natural gas deposit in 1989. He led a Burlington Resources team that booked more than one trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Fruitland coal formation of the San Juan Basin. The effort required drilling thousands of wells and conducting extensive subsurface evaluations.

This discovery had lasting effects on the industry. Beyond Burlington, the work influenced coal seam gas (CSG) developments in Australia, which now include multibillion-dollar projects. Mr. Caldwell credits this project's success to a collaborative group of engineers and specialists who worked under tight timelines to quantify reserves and meet regulatory reporting standards.

Mr. Caldwell attributes his effectiveness to increased productivity. "One of the keys to my career is that 20 years ago, I focused on the 80:20 principles as developed by Wilfred Pareto and known as the Pareto Principle," he says. "What that means is 20% of what you do gives you 80% of the benefit." By applying this principle, he has been able to focus first on critical tasks while limiting time spent on less impactful work.

Advances in Benchmarking and Drilling Techniques

Building on his work in efficiency, Mr. Caldwell is known for advancing benchmarking and continuous process improvement throughout his career. He became involved in the early 2000s and later collaborated with Solomon Associates to conduct benchmarking projects globally. "I've been to Calgary, Bismarck, North Dakota, Dallas, Houston and Midland, Texas, in addition to Australia," he says.

Beyond benchmarking, Mr. Caldwell has also followed and contributed to the advancements in drilling methods. "I think the explosion in unconventional horizontal drilling has been amazing," he says. "They've extended the reach from some of these wells from two miles to three miles."

In recent years, the introduction of U-turn or horseshoe wells has addressed lease-line constraints, utilizing drilling methods that often reach measured depths of 35,000 feet. These inventions have had a significant economic impact, as the U.S. has reduced its dependence on foreign energy resources.

Guidance for Future Professionals

In addition to his technical work, Mr. Caldwell participates in community service. He served as board chair for the New Mexico state chapter and the Northwest New Mexico chapter of the American Red Cross, an involvement that took on deeper meaning after losing two children in a car accident more than 20 years ago. His surviving son now works in the oil business.

With nearly five decades in the industry, Mr. Caldwell also focuses on mentoring the next generation of oil and gas professionals, recruiting students from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, and mentoring younger engineers from many other universities. Among the advice he offers others is the importance of accepting new opportunities. "You have to be curious, diligent, open to change, adaptable and take different assignments that you may not think you're ready for," he says.
