Former Lockheed Martin VP and Author Haden A. Land Joins Xraised to Set Out Why Divergent Thinking Is the Most Underutilised Human Advantage in the AI Era

The Argument Behind Think Twice

Land's book makes the case that professional culture has, over several decades, systematically optimised for one mode of thinking at the expense of another. The analytical, convergent mode, focused on identifying the right answer as efficiently as possible, has been the dominant model in education and early career development. As AI systems become increasingly capable of performing that same mode of thinking faster and more accurately than humans, Land's position is that the competitive advantage shifts toward what he identifies as the underutilised half of human intelligence.

"We have been trained, through decades of education and early career experience, to operate in mostly controlled environments," Land explains. "We are not trained well to meet a problem that has no definition yet. And when one arrives, which increasingly one will in the AI era, we will find ourselves equipped for a world that is no longer the dominant world of professional life as we know it."

The Neuroscience Framework

Land grounds the book's central argument in the distinction between two well-documented neural networks. The Central Executive Network, centred in the prefrontal cortex, activates during focused analytical work including deciding, calculating, writing, and planning. The Default Mode Network, a more widespread system encompassing the hippocampus, angular gyrus, cingulate cortex, and parietal lobule, activates during rest, daydreaming, meditation, and unstructured thought.

Land's analysis is that professional training has consistently prioritised the Central Executive Network while allowing the Default Mode Network to go underutilised. The Default Mode, in his framing, is the source of divergent and exploratory cognition and the capacity to imagine what does not yet exist. It is also, in his assessment, the cognitive mode that AI does not have and may never develop.

"The AI era will not reward the people who can only compute," Land states. "It will reward the people who can explore and evaluate at once, and who know when to switch between the two."

Leadership, Management, and the VIPER Framework

The episode also covers Land's VIPER framework, developed during his years leading organisations ranging from twelve to seven thousand five hundred people across government, manufacturing, academia, space, energy, law enforcement, logistics, financial services, and healthcare.

VIPER stands for vision, influence, process, execution, and responsibility. Land's position is that effective leaders ask what and why, trained managers ask how and when, and forward-thinking executives need to be comfortable operating across all four, depending on the situation and the moment.

"Leadership requires vision and influence, and management requires process and execution," Land explains. "But the optimal performing executives have the responsibility to do all four in the right situation, at the right time."

The framework is described in detail in Chapter 13 of Think Twice, alongside a measurement tool built around the construct of goal, focus, approach, and success metric.

Human and Artificial Intelligence

The conversation also addresses how Land sees the relationship between human and artificial intelligence developing. His view is that the future is not characterised by competition between humans and machines but by the complementary application of each to the problems where they are best suited.

AI systems, in Land's analysis, excel at convergent thinking, processing large datasets, identifying patterns, and performing repetitive tasks with consistency. Human intelligence, at its most effective, contributes divergent thinking, emotional intelligence, moral reasoning, and the capacity to imagine what does not yet exist. The concept of Artificial Human Intelligence, where AI systems are designed to more closely mirror human cognitive processes by handling ambiguity and adapting to real-world context, is one Land expects to become increasingly significant in how AI development proceeds.
