Entrepreneur and real estate developer Sujay Thakur has announced the launch of ABQ Blue Room, a new event space in Albuquerque designed not just for gatherings, but for opportunity. The project brings together immigrant entrepreneurs, local food vendors, and small business owners in a shared space that reflects the city’s diversity and economic potential.
At the centre of the initiative is an immigrant couple from Guatemala and Mexico, who will lead the day-to-day operations of the venue. In addition, the space will feature food offerings from immigrant-owned local vendors, creating a platform for small businesses to grow and gain visibility.
“This isn’t just about opening a venue,” said Thakur. “It’s about creating space for people who are building something from the ground up, just like I did. When you support small businesses, you support entire communities.”
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, immigrants are nearly twice as likely to start businesses as native-born citizens, and small businesses account for 44% of U.S. economic activity. In New Mexico alone, immigrant-owned businesses contribute significantly to local employment and cultural vibrancy.
Thakur sees ABQ Blue Room as a way to connect these efforts. “Immigrant businesses often bring innovation, resilience, and a strong work ethic. They deserve visibility and support.”
A Community-First Approach to Growth
The concept reflects Thakur’s broader belief in building businesses that are rooted in community impact. His companies, Raj Holdings and Thakur Enterprises, have developed over 1.5 million square feet of property, often focusing on projects that create long-term value.
“Real estate is not just about buildings, it’s about people,” he said. “If the people succeed, the space succeeds.”
Supporting Local and Immigrant Businesses
Thakur encourages individuals to take simple steps to support local entrepreneurs:
-
Choose local vendors when planning events or gatherings
-
Attend community-driven spaces like ABQ Blue Room
-
Promote small businesses through word of mouth and social media
-
Be intentional about where you spend your money
“You don’t need a large platform to make a difference,” Thakur added. “Every decision you make as a consumer shapes the local economy.”
