Chicago, IL - Author and educator Stephen L. Sherwin introduces A Guide to Mediation Training: An Insightful and Uncomplicated Guide to Learning Mediation, a timely resource that demonstrates how structured mediation can create meaningful change in families, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Unlike traditional approaches that often rely on punishment or adversarial systems, this book highlights how mediation empowers people to resolve their disputes in constructive and respectful ways. With decades of experience as a Marine Corps veteran, police officer, and university professor, Sherwin combines professional expertise with practical training methods to demonstrate to readers how mediation can be effective in both formal and everyday settings.
“Mediation is not only about resolving conflict,”Sherwin explains, “It is about restoring trust, preserving dignity, and giving people the tools to move forward.”
The book covers the essentials of mediation with clarity and accessibility, offering step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. Readers will learn how to:
- Apply active listening and reframing to reduce tension and improve communication.
- Navigate cultural differences with sensitivity and fairness.
- Guide disputing parties through a five-step process toward agreements that last.
- Use mediation in diverse environments, including law enforcement, schools, and community organizations.
A Guide to Mediation Training also emphasizes restorative justice, demonstrating how mediation can provide second chances and alternatives to punitive measures. Through real-world insights, Sherwin shows how mediation can transform conflicts that often damage relationships into opportunities for growth and cooperation.
The book is designed for a wide audience, including educators, HR professionals, law enforcement officers, students, and anyone interested in learning practical tools for conflict resolution. It offers not only a training framework for future mediators but also skills that can be applied in everyday life.
