Auckland, New Zealand - Backed by 3 Islands Intermodal, Boxman sets out on its next phase of nationwide growth

Boxman Shipping Containers, among New Zealand's most recognised container providers, has stepped into a new chapter with the support of 3 Islands Intermodal (3i), the nation's only locally-owned nationwide port services provider. The deal delivers fresh investment, a depot expansion that extends Boxman across the country alongside 3i's established logistics network, and a renewed commitment to the high-quality service Boxman customers have trusted since 1990.

For customers, it's business as usual and then some. Boxman will continue running with the same regional focus it has always maintained, keeping decision-makers within local communities rather than centralised in Auckland. Supported by 3i's 700-strong nationwide workforce and deep logistics expertise, the business is now positioned to serve more Kiwis in more places than ever.

Gavin McIntyre, CEO of 3 Islands Intermodal, said the choice to acquire the business was a straightforward one:

"We are very pleased to have purchased the Boxman assets and contracts, and to welcome the Boxman team into the 3i family. 3i was a customer of Boxman before the receivership occurred and, having been fortunate to have purchased it out of receivership, we plan to focus it on providing great sales, leasing and modification services to existing and new customers."

McIntyre said customers can expect the same high-quality service and reasonable pricing they have always enjoyed.

"It's been important for us to keep Boxman in Kiwi ownership, as its owner we are approaching the Boxman offering to customers in the same way that we approached it when we were a customer ourselves. We are excited to work with the Boxman team to grow the business further and advance our customers' businesses at the same time," he said.

A depot expansion programme is already in motion. A new Boxman depot opened in Tauranga last month, with further openings lined up for North-West Auckland, Hamilton, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill across the next 24 months. The rollout comes with investment in upgraded depot facilities, improved container modification services, and greater convenience for customers accessing Boxman's offering nearer to where they live and do business.

3i's acquisition underscores a broader philosophy: keeping vital New Zealand infrastructure and supply chains in local hands. With 7.5% of 3i owned through its employee trust, the company's team members are shareholders themselves, a structure that fosters the long-term thinking and community-minded service that sits naturally alongside Boxman's culture.

McIntyre said the formula for long-term success was straightforward.

"100% Kiwi ownership, high-quality service at a fair price, and a genuine commitment to helping Kiwi businesses grow. That's what we're here for, and that's exactly what Boxman has always stood for."

For existing and prospective Boxman customers, nothing changes on the ground, save for more options, more locations, and stronger backing than ever before.
