OLYMPIA, WA / ACCESS Newswire / September 28, 2026 / Police officer Christopher Backus is emphasizing the importance of continued training throughout a career in law enforcement, drawing on experience across corrections, jail operations, reserve policing, and municipal police departments in Washington.

Backus has worked in several areas of the justice system, including the Washington Department of Corrections, Shelton Police Department, Mason County Jail, Tukwila Police Department, Tenino Police Department, and Grand Coulee Police Department. He says that moving between different environments reinforced his belief that law enforcement professionals should never consider their training complete.

"Training is something I think you have to keep coming back to throughout your career," said Backus. "The job changes, communities change, and you are always going to run into situations that challenge what you already know."

Backus believes effective training should extend beyond required instruction and include regular opportunities to improve communication, decision-making, physical preparation, and practical skills. He also sees value in reviewing past situations and learning from officers with different backgrounds and levels of experience.

His interest in preparation has roots outside law enforcement as well. Backus grew up playing baseball and football in Olympia and continues to play softball. He says sports helped teach him the value of repetition, teamwork, and practicing basic skills even when the work itself is not exciting.

"People sometimes want training to always be new or fast-paced, but there is a lot of value in repetition," he said. "You want good habits to be there when you need them."

Backus also believes training should include a stronger understanding of community engagement. In particular, he sees value in creating more opportunities for officers to interact positively with young people before a difficult situation occurs.

"Not every interaction needs to happen because someone is in trouble," said Backus. "Sometimes just having a normal conversation or doing something in the community can help people see each other differently."

Backus earned an associate degree from South Puget Sound Community College before completing a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology at Saint Martin's University. He received partial academic scholarships during his university studies and made the Honor Roll while attending community college.

Outside of work, he enjoys working out, hiking, camping, softball, fly fishing in Montana, and spending time with family. He says those activities help provide balance while reinforcing the same approach he brings to his professional life: stay consistent, keep learning, and make time for what matters.
