The Energy Select Sector SPDR ( XLE A ) , the largest equity-based energy ETF, posted a modest October gain, but the fund’s recent uptick, and those of its rivals, will be tested Friday by earnings reports from Dow components Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) and Chevron ( CVX ) , the two largest U.S. oil companies.
