Dr. Manuel Quiñones, a family medicine physician with HealthTexas Medical Group, has been recognized by the San Antonio Business Journal as a Health Care Hero in the Outstanding Physician – Non-Hospital Based category.

Each year, the San Antonio Business Journal recognizes outstanding physicians and executives in the medical field who have made a substantial impact in San Antonio health care.

“Being honored as a Health Care Hero is a reminder of how fortunate I am to treat the patients that I do in family medicine and to do all that I can to help maintain or improve their health and well-being,” Quiñones said.

Dr. Quiñones, or Dr. Q has he is known to many, has been practicing medicine for over 35 years. Born and raised on San Antonio’s West Side, he graduated from Holy Cross High School before receiving his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University, and then completed his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. Today, he has a special interest in treating adult patients with hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol; however, he has treated dozens of families that span over three to four generations.

Dr. Q has participated on many boards, such as the Bexar County Medical Society, Mexican American Physicians Association, American Red Cross and San Antonio Medical Foundation, to name a few. He has also received numerous awards and recognitions over the years including Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors in America, Texas Super Doctors and Best Doctors in San Antonio.

Nonetheless, it is his two most recent lifetime achievements that he is most proud of – an appointment by Governor Gregg Abbott to the Texas Medical Board and bestowment by the Bexar County Medical Society with its Golden Aesculapius Award.

The Texas Medical Board is the state agency tasked with regulating the practice of medicine state-wide. Its mission is to protect and enhance the public’s health, safety and welfare by establishing and maintaining standards of excellence used in regulating the practice of medicine and ensuring quality health care for the citizens of Texas through licensure, discipline and education. Through his appointment, Dr. Q is champions the rights and safety of patients throughout the Great State of Texas so they receive the highest quality of care possible, and is also an advocate for his fellow physicians who can fall victim to unfair and malicious accusations.

The Bexar County Medical Society established the Golden Aesculapius Award as its highest honor recognizing a lifetime of distinguished service by a BCMS member to their patients and the profession. The award is not given out annually, but only upon the occasion of the nomination and confirmation of distinguished service.

When he’s not teaching the next generation of health care providers through his faculty appointment at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Medicine, one can find him doing community service at his clinic during rodeo season at his infamous Q-Boy breakfast, or giving away fans to seniors during summer months. He also supports nonprofits through his work with the Texas Cavaliers and chairmanship of Harper’s Embrace Lifesaver Program which provides free and basic CPR lifesaving skills to the community.

HealthTexas Medical Group was established in 1994 by local physicians who recognized the need for primary care doctors to combine their passion, skills and resources to improve the health of the patients within the local community. Since then, HealthTexas has grown to include more than 60 healthcare providers in 16 primary care clinics in and around the San Antonio region all working toward that same goal.
