Osteopathic Certification Work Group Created

Associations form collaborative steering committee to establish competitive initial certification options for candidates.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - December 26, 2018 - (Newswire.com)

Leadership from the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO), the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP), the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNMM) and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) met in Tampa, FL on Friday, December 14, to discuss proposed enhancements to the initial certification process.

The groups held a productive and collaborative meeting during which they determined a need to form a steering committee to work in conjunction with each specialty board to establish competitive initial certification options for their candidates. This initial steering committee will be comprised of representatives from each organization and will utilize evidence-based research and data to propose initial certification pathways to appeal to a new generation of physicians.

Research shows that candidate diplomates want options in certification. There are physicians across all specialties who have an interest in OMT. The steering committee will be enhancing the process to allow these individuals to pursue certification with this component. The committee will work on options that are relevant to all practicing physicians while upholding high standards.

Maintaining Osteopathic Principles and Practices is a priority for all of the organizations and they will keep those principles at the forefront as these efforts progress.

The groups are excited to work collaboratively together to enhance board certification options across all the specialties within the American Osteopathic Association to position the profession for future success. They are committed to transparency and open communication and will provide ongoing updates so that physicians can follow the progress.
