George Klein, a native and lifelong resident of Worcester, MA, and his wife Linda, sent their eldest, Tamie Endow, nèe Klein, and their second child, David to Syracuse University following their graduation from Doherty Memorial High School, in Worcester. George Klein, a second-generation roofing contractor could not have been more proud to have his children be among the first in their family to attend college. David Klein met his future wife on his very first day at Syracuse, and has a son who is an aspiring sports broadcaster, with his sights set on attending the University.

“We are extremely grateful to the Kleins and Greenwood Industries for establishing this scholarship. Now more than ever, Syracuse University is focused on creating the best possible experience for students, and providing them with financial support is a critical component to their success,” says Matt Ter Molen, chief advancement officer and senior vice president for Syracuse University’s division of advancement and external affairs. “A scholarship is an investment in a human being, and we have seen it change lives over and over again.”

Following his graduation from Syracuse University, David and his sister Tamie founded a commercial and residential roofing business, in a small office park on Worcester’s Greenwood Street. Combining his degree in Management Information Systems, which is today called the Syracuse University iSchool, and a hard-earned summer education in hanging shingles, spreading asphalt, and managing teams of more experienced roofing professionals, Klein has been able to grow Greenwood Industries into a multi-faceted construction business, operating in 6 Northeast cities, and this summer landing at No. 9 on Roofing Contractor’s 2020 Top 100 Roofing Contractors.

With over 750 employees, in peak season, and breaking $135,000,000 in revenue for FY19, Mr. Klein confirms, “I am utilizing every aspect of my education, from management information, to statistics and data analysis, and the actual roofing work my dad started training me for at the age of five.” These are very tough times for lots of people, and Klein is pleased to give something back to his hometown.

“I am thrilled to do what I can to help kids from Worcester receive the tools they need to procure a bright and successful future.” He adds, “My dad would let it be known that enabling more kids from Worcester, MA to attend Syracuse University, is not just a gift to the students, but a great gift to the school.”

This month, out of their current headquarters at 640 Lincoln Street, Greenwood Industries, Inc. is wrapping up a dream job for its SU alumnus founder, the installation of the new roof on the Syracuse University campus icon, that might forever be referred to as The Carrier Dome.

For those who would like to join the Kleins in this mission, gifts and donations to the George Klein Endowed Scholarship may be made by contacting Shawn Rommevaux in Syracuse University’s Office of Development, Advancement and External Affairs, at 315.480.6648.
