Do prescription medication prices make you feel angry, nervous, or helpless? Have you ever skipped doses or stopped taking your medicine because you couldn’t pay for it?

Many people have started using personal drug importation. This means buying medicine from other countries. Importing medicines can save them money and help them to get the medications they need.

Cary Byrd, the president of eDrugSearch.com, says “US drug prices have always been higher than any other country.” When you add up how much all Americans spend on medication, you can then divide that cost by the number of citizens.

This average shows that over $1,200 is spent on prescription drugs every year for each US citizen. Drugs for patients getting cancer treatment cost about $10,000 per month.

Drug companies sometimes buy old drugs that no other businesses are selling. The company then raises the medication price because they’re the only place to buy the drug.

President Trump recently signed four executive orders about personal drug importation. These orders give Americans a safe way to get medicines from international and Canadian pharmacies online.

BENEFITS OF PERSONAL DRUG IMPORTATION

Personal drug importation is not a new idea. This has taken place for years. Today, more legislation is being passed to help Americans safely import medicines.

The following describes several benefits of getting medications from other countries.

LOWER PRICES

Online pharmacies can offer lower prices for several reasons. One, they don’t have the overhead costs of maintaining a brick-and-mortar store. They buy in bulk so they can pass their cost savings on to the customer.

Also, the drugs less in other countries than in the United States.

CONVENIENCE

Many people have a hard time going to a physical pharmacy. They may have physical problems that make it hard to go places. People may not drive or have other ways to get to the pharmacy.

Some people’s work hours are at the same time as when the pharmacy is open. This makes it very hard to pick up prescriptions. Being able to order your refill online solves these problems.

PRIVACY

Your personal health information is very private. People who live in smaller towns may even know the person filling their prescriptions. This can make them feel uncomfortable.

Using an online pharmacy lets you fill prescriptions without any personal contact. These pharmacies must follow privacy policies and safeguards.

ACCESS TO MEDICAL INFORMATION

Some of the online pharmacies have sections that teach patients about medicines. They tell you facts about the drugs and the right way to take them. You can also learn about different diseases.

If you take more than one medicine there is a chance that they may not work well together. Some of these sites let you put all your medications in and check for possible problems.

CANADIAN DRUG LAWS YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU ORDER DRUGS FROM CANADA

The current laws about buying drugs from Canada have strict rules. The Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) oversees the process. All imported drugs certification rules. This makes sure that they aren’t a risk to American’s health and safety.

International online pharmacies must first get FDA approval and follow all FDA rules. All Canadian pharmacies have to meet these rules:

  • Must pass an FDA inspection of the manufacturing facility
  • The FDA must approve each medicine that they plan to sell to Americans
  • Only drug makers can import medicine into the United States

The Medicine Equity and Drug Safety 2003 (MEDS) Act lets U.S. pharmacists and wholesalers import prescription drugs. The drugs may only be imported from Canada. They must follow certain guidelines and safeguards.

The HHS Secretary may grant waivers to people who only import medicines for personal use.

TRUMP’S EXECUTIVE ORDERS ADDRESSING DRUG IMPORTATION

On July 27, 2020, President Trump signed four executive orders to help lower drug prices. The following gives a summary of each of the executive orders.

1.) EXECUTIVE ORDER ON ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE LIFE-SAVING MEDICATIONS

This orders federally qualified health centers (FQHCS) to calculate all discounts they get. The price for insulin and epinephrine must include these discounts for low-income Americans.

2.) EXECUTIVE ORDER ON INCREASING PERSONAL DRUG IMPORTATION TO LOWER PRICES FOR AMERICA PATIENTS

This order gives states guidelines for writing plans to safely import specific drugs. It lets companies re-import insulin that was first made in the United States. The order also helps more people get personal importation waivers at American pharmacies.

3.) EXECUTIVE ORDER ON LOWERING PRICES FOR PATIENTS BY ELIMINATING KICKBACKS TO MIDDLEMEN

This stops drug makers and pharmacies from making secret deals with a middleman. The middleman makes money by helping their partners save money. This executive order stops this practice so that patients can get discounts.

4.) ORDER TO ENSURE LOW PRICES FOR MEDICARE PART B DRUGS

The fourth executive order is about Medicare Part B drug coverage. It makes sure that Americans with this coverage pay the same low prices as people in other countries. The other countries must have an economy that’s like America’s.

President Trump plans to work with drug companies to lower the current 80% price mark-up. This order will last for one month beginning August 24, 2020. It will start whether or not agreements with drug companies have been reached.

During the signing ceremony, Alex Azar, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services stated: “You’re going to have a personal importation program, where individuals can get their drugs low cost from abroad.”
