I’m departing from the series on forecasting this week. We will get back to it next week, but for today, I want to call attention to the passing of a great man, Sam Howard. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Sam. In fact, I would call Sam my friend.

As a CPA, I did several projects for Sam over several years, and he taught me a lot. When I first worked with Sam, he was facing great adversity and business challenges. I watched him grapple with those problems with integrity and grace, and what I learned from working with Sam still impacts me today.

But enough about me, and a few great things about Sam’s life: He was a leader. He was a healthcare executive. He started one of the very first TennCare HMOs, Xantus. He developed real estate. He helped lead 100 Black Men, a non-profit mentoring organization in Nashville. In fact, he mentored many Middle Tennessee entrepreneurs, including Michael and Barbara Turney of Mama Turney’s Homemade Pies. Sam was also one of the kindest people I’ve ever known.

We could use his leadership today.

I’m proud to have known Sam for as long as I did. If you’re interested in learning more about his life and career, The Nashville Business Journal did a good review on Sam’s business career.

I will miss you, Sam. Thankful for the time we were given.

We’ll be back next week to continue our series on forecasting. Be well.
