Brett Greenky and Seth Greenky aren’t just brothers. They’re both surgeons – surgeons who wanted to make a difference in the world.
This year marks 10 years since Dr. Brett Greenky and his brother, Dr. Seth Greenky, started Operation Walk New York, a branch of the national Operation Walk organization. Operation Walk New York describes itself as “a non-profit organization that allows severely arthritic patients in countries with underdeveloped health care systems to receive total-joint replacements at no cost.”
Over those 10 years, Dr. Brett Greenky and other medical professionals have performed free joint replacement surgeries for patients across the world. Without Operation Walk New York, hundreds of people would suffer through debilitating pain with no access to the care they desperately seek. The 2019 Operation Walk New York mission was to Ghana, performing 50 surgeries at no cost to patients.
Teams of volunteers and donors come together to make these medical missions possible. In addition to performing surgeries in Ghana from 2016 to 2019, Operation Walk New York performed surgeries in Nepal in 2011, Panama in 2012 and 2013 as well as Guatemala in 2015 and 2016.
In the 2019 medical mission to Ghana, the Operation Walk New York team met Francis, a 24-year-old who had been living with severe arthritis for six years. His condition made sitting so painful that he could only stand or lie down. After surgery, Francis walked for the first time.
“Helping people is why we are in the medical field. The people you meet on these trips and their stories stick with you for a lifetime. In places like Ghana and Panama, they wouldn’t be able to have these surgeries otherwise,” said Dr. Brett Greenky.
