Struggling with the game of golf?  Having a lot of mistakes on just a few holes that are keeping scores from being lower?  Learning about how missed shots happen on the golf course can help make big improvements to lowering the golf score.

For many players, understanding how and why they miss shots on the golf course is a very important part of game improvement according to Award-Winning Golf Coach & "Top 100" Golf Instructor Arlen Bento Jr. in Stuart Florida.  If players study their golf games they will start to see tendencies, these tendencies define a player's game and show them how to make improvements.

Years ago, Arlen Bento Jr. came up with a concept that he calls P-M-I Miss Identifiers.  This concept has been very successful in the development of many players.

When anyone plays golf, shots are missed, over time to get better, the idea of P-M-I Miss Identifiers is that players need to identify and categorize those miss shots and eliminate them from the scorecard.

For example, there was a player that was in training with Coach Bento who was stuck at scoring in the low 80's. Using P-M-I Miss Identifiers it was determined by Coach Bento that the 3 wood was costing the player 3-4 shots each 18 hole golf round.  Before the players, next 18 holes the 3 wood was taken out of play and the player was instructed to use a 5 wood, which helped produce a score of 75. Time was spent working on the 3 wood over the next few weeks to figure out why the 3 wood was not working well and the player was able to make improvements and inserted the 3 wood back into play.  This is a simple, yet powerful example of how the P-M-I Miss Identifier System works.

Another example of how the P-M-I Miss Identifier System works is based on a good player that was having a tough time backing up a low 70's score on the second day of a 36 hole golf tournament, the player would score a score low 70's score on the first day, then come back the next day with low 80's score, this is very common in golf tournament play.

By breaking down the player's golf scorecard using P-M-I Miss Identifiers it was determined that the majority of his misses were coming with the player's 6-5-4 irons that were being used to hit second shots at the flag on longer par 4 holes and longer par 3 holes.  A new strategy was developed for the player that did not allow any shots at any flags with those clubs, instead, playing for the middle of the green and making sure that if the player had a really solid hit that the shot could not get to the back of the green. This strategy eliminated 2-3 miss shots per round and protected birdies from bogeys or worse on these long shots.  The player's scores went down and more tournament rounds back to back in the low 70's appeared that helped earn the player a college scholarship.

P-M-I Miss Identifiers offer an analysis of the golf round by looking at how many misses a player creates on the scorecard.  To use this system, a player needs to go back through a scorecard from a round of golf and identify every miss or mistake that is made during the round.  Anything that costs a stroke is a mistake.

There are three types of misses in every golf round in the P-M-I Miss Identifier System.  The first miss is Physical Miss. A Physical Miss is just a bad swing or bad technique.  When a player analyzes a scorecard they label every Physical Miss with a "P". An example of a Physical Miss could be a "Slice Swing" out of bounds or a "Fat Shot" from the middle of the fairway with an iron or a "Chili Dip" on a chip shot.

The second kind of miss is Mental Miss.  A Mental Miss is anytime a player just did not have the proper focus on a shot.  Examples of Mental Miss's include getting distracted by people talking or a golf cart moving close by, even a course worker driving a mower across the fairway 200 yards away that catches a players eye, if a player was distracted and focus was lost on the shot and a miss occurs, this is a Mental Miss.  When the scorecard is analyzed label every Mental Miss with an "M".

The third kind of miss is an Intellectual Miss.  An Intellectual Miss happens when a player hits a shot that is just not a good decision based on the player's skillset or a shot that has a very low probability for success.  Examples of Intellectual Misses including trying to hit a low lofted club out of the "Rough" or trying to hit a delicate flop shot off a "Hard Pan Lie". When a scorecard is analyzed label every Intellectual Miss with the letter "I".

Breaking down a player's golf game with P-M-I Miss Identifiers is a very powerful tool to help with golf improvement.  As players break down their golf rounds, tendencies are found based on P-M-I Miss Identifier System.

If a player has a lot of Physical Misses, more instruction is needed, working on how to hit the clubs better that are causing the misses.  If a player has a lot in Mental Misses, working on a better pre-shot routine will help when the focus is lost so a player can re-focus before hitting a golf shot.  If a player has a lot of Intellectual Misses, discussions about shots and the ability to pull shots off, how and why shots work and learning more about the percentages of execution are needed.

Normally, an analysis with P-M-I Miss Identifiers finds 10-15 misses per round for most mid handicappers.  Once these misses have been identified, a strategy to eliminate these misses from the scorecard is created by Coach Bento, ultimately lowering the score of the player.
