There may come a time either after building a home or buying one that a driveway may become necessary. Before starting the process, take a few minutes, and consider what all is required in a driveway.
“Most people just assume we come out and lay the asphalt, but this is not the case. There is quite a bit of work that goes into the preparation before we bring the trucks,” said Carl Koch, owner of One Day Driveway of Long Island.
The area for the driveway has to be measured. If there is older driveway material, it may have to come up as well. The ground may require certain preparations as well.
“Most do not realize it, but plants and weeds can still grow through asphalt, even if it is well taken care of. We dig the foundation and spread salt over the underlayer. This completely inhibits growth for a very long time, thus protecting the customer investment,” said Koch.
Asphalt is only one of the many choices available for a driveway, but it is also the most common in Long Island. Other options include brick, concrete, paver stone and gravel. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages.
“The best decision to make is having me or one of my employees come to the home and do a free, no obligation estimate on the driveway. We can also determine what would work best based on the home and the driveway itself. There are many different options, and we can discuss them all,” said Koch.
