February 11, 2020 – Mesa, Arizona – On February 5, 2020, the eye care professionals at Carrot Eye Center completed the first ever small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) eye surgery to be performed in the Phoenix area.

This groundbreaking surgery is one of the newest and most advanced vision correction procedures available today. SMILE is FDA-approved to correct cases of nearsightedness, granting patients freedom from having to wear glasses and contacts.

During SMILE surgery, a femtosecond laser is used to create a tiny incision in the cornea, through which a small layer beneath the surface of the eye is removed, effectively correcting vision. Carrot Eye Center co-founders, Michael Herion, M.D., and Matthew Hammond, M.D., are excited about the prospect of adding SMILE to the list of their options for laser eye surgery.

“Laser vision correction changes lives, but not every patient is an ideal candidate for a certain eye surgery,” Dr. Hammond said. “While LASIK and PRK are two successful methods for correcting vision, SMILE has its own benefits — one is a shorter recovery time.”

SMILE is a less invasive procedure than LASIK, and it carries less risk for a patient developing dry eye after surgery. While their respective downtimes differ, SMILE, LASIK, and PRK are capable of producing exceptional visual results.

“When we began Carrot Eye Center, we knew that we wanted to give our patients the best treatments for both their eyes and lifestyles, and that meant providing them with options,” Dr. Herion said. “We don’t’ believe in “one-size-fits-all” solutions. We’re proud to introduce Phoenix to this innovative new procedure and are excited to give our patients more options for their vision correction.”

“SMILE has already been used to help millions of people see the world clearly without glasses or contacts,” Dr. Hammond said. “We’re proud to be the first to offer SMILE in our region and can’t wait to use it to transform countless lives in the future.”
