Born in Bad Saulgau in southern Germany, Dr. Schmidt did his undergraduate studies at the University of Utah. He completed medical school and a residency in neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He then went on to complete fellowships in neuro-oncology and spine surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Most recently, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the David Eccles School of Business of the University of Utah.
A Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The primary purposes of the ABNS are to conduct examinations of candidates who voluntarily seek certification and to issue certificates to those who meet the requirements of the board and satisfactorily complete its examinations.
To further his professional development, Dr. Schmidt's research interests include investigating the benefits of minimally invasive spinal surgery for metastatic tumors, and the development of health outcome and quality of care measures. He is internationally known for his role in establishing a new thoracoscopic spine surgery technique for tumors and fractures. His research and clinical work have resulted in over 170 peer-reviewed manuscripts, chapters, and books.
