SmartThings & Acuity Brands Announce Alliance to Co-develop Smart Home Lighting Products

SmartThings, the leader in automation and the easy way to make homes smart, today announces an alliance with Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI) to co-develop smart lighting products that will natively connect to the Samsung SmartThings® mobile application (app). The two companies are collaborating on smart home lighting solutions through the Acuity Design Studio, which encompasses industrial design, engineering and portfolio management resources from Acuity Brands and Samsung – housed within Acuity Brands’ Atlanta, GA-based operations.

Acuity representatives will be participating in a joint panel with SmartThings at this week’s Samsung Developer Conference (“SDC19”). Representatives will also be available at the SmartThings booth, located within the partner exhibition area, to demonstrate how homeowners will be able to connect and control compatible lighting fixtures from Acuity Brands directly from their SmartThings mobile app without having to purchase a bridge or adapter. The annual conference is being held at the San Jose, CA Convention Center, October 29-30, 2019.

“We established the Acuity Design Studio in October 2018 with the vision to create a better smart home lighting experience for residential customers,” said Yan Rodriguez, Vice President - Acuity Design Studio, Acuity Brands Lighting. “Our collaboration with SmartThings blends their home controls experience and market penetration with our established smart lighting expertise.”

“Our ambition at SmartThings is to continuously expand our platform and ecosystem capabilities to offer smart home access across a wide variety of devices. Lighting is one of the most powerful use cases for smart home customers, and continuing to develop these controls and device access points allows us to provide our users with greater utility in their devices,” said Ralf Elias, Vice President of IoT and Global Business Development & Partnerships at Samsung Electronics. “We are proud to be working closely with the Acuity Brands lighting team to create global solutions for the residential lighting space.”
