Charlotte, NORTH CAROLINA (September 26, 2019) – First Care Medical Clinic, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, has introduced a new program to manage chronic pain without having to take prescription drugs.

According to the clinic, owned by Dr. Ben Okwara, who is also its CEO and medical director, chronic pain caused by old injuries, sciatica, spinal issues and trauma, among others can be eliminated using safer, more effective and non-invasive alternatives to painkillers, which carry the risks of addiction or complications in patients.

The clinic’s advanced non-narcotic pain management system called ElectroMedicine uses electrical stimulation and inhibition on the peripheral nerves, the dorsal column of the spinal cord, or any parts of the body to ease pain.

The ElectroMedicine treatment comes in two methods: Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Electroanalgesia (EA).

TENS uses a portable device with tiny electrodes that are attached to the skin to deliver low-voltage electrical energy for pain relief. TENS sends one to 250 pulses per second to the treatment site. Its intention is to stimulate nerves to decrease pain.

On the other hand, EA equipment uses electrical frequencies that are higher than what is delivered by a TENS device, usually ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 pulses per second. The electrical energy is directed at specific areas in the body to stimulate a patient’s peripheral nerves, reaching deeper into a patient’s tissues. Its desired effect is to inhibit pain signals, preventing a patient’s mind from registering pain.

Both types of pain therapy are recommended for those suffering from back pain, lower back pain, peripheral neuropathy, whiplash pain after an accident, degenerative joint diseases such as arthritis, severe and/or neurologic sciatica pain, Bell’s palsy, facial neuralgia, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, gout and even various headaches such as migraine.

TENS and EA are also ideal as adjunctive treatments of post-traumatic pain and in the management of post-surgical pain, to boost local blood circulation, relax muscle spasms, maintain or increase a patient’s range of motion, prevent or treat disuse atrophy and prevent venous thrombosis, among many other uses.

Both methods are well-tolerated by patients, offering little to no discomfort or side effects. At First Care Medical Clinic, patients are typically advised to attend 20 pain therapy sessions every day or every other day to better manage their pain.

The treatments provide patients with long-term advantages that include being able to return to the workforce, going through daily activities with less pain, huge cost savings in terms of treatment and subsequent lifelong medications, and preventing interventions or surgery in patients for whom every alternative treatment has been used or for whom other treatments present a risk. Overall, TENS and EA allow patients to regain the lifestyle they formerly enjoyed.
