Beyond Positive Thinking

This book contains one revolutionary insight. It can save your life or turn it around. This insight is simple yet radical, if you follow its implications to the fullest.

It is: positive thoughts lead to positive actions. Authors Arnold Fox, M.D., and Barry Fox, Ph.D., define their formula as: PTPA = Positive Thoughts, Positive Action. One concrete, positive action—or a string of them across the span of a challenge or an entire life—can produce dramatic results.

Discover and learn:
  • That thought itself is the impetus to action
  • A sense of possibility, happiness, and self-ownership that arises when you make a single effort, however slight, to stand upright and behave with agency
  • Thinking can vivify and revive the flagging efforts and constructive acts of a suffering patient or distraught person, who may otherwise lapse into passivity
  • The inducement to action can mark the difference between success and failure, recovery and decline
  • A model of positive thinking that takes into account the struggles of those facing dire, and possibly mortal, contests – examples from:
    • Cancer and paralysis patients
    • Holocaust survivors
    • Bullied kids facing physical challenges
    • Mothers who have miscarried
    • "Adverse" chapters of life that are rare in conventional positive-mind books
    • To summon dedication, persistence, and initiative from within yourself
    • How to experience life in its finest and most noble form
    • That the greatest possibility for experiencing solutions comes from the individual who acts, collaborates, and engages with life—forces that are set into most by positive, constructive thoughts

The Path to Riches in Think and Grow Rich

As the contributors to The Path to Riches explore, there is nothing superfluous, extra, or unnecessary in Napoleon Hill's famous classic Think and Grow Rich.  Each and every step is vital and intimately connected to all of the others. There is no halfway approach to his program. For that very reason, The Path to Riches is of great value to the student of self-development. Its engaging and short chapters highlight Hill's rules and ideas in ways that refresh them in your mind, and keep you working with Hill's full program.

In some ways our society has grown too "sophisticated." Or, put differently, too cynical. We think that because we've already heard of a certain principle, or because an ethic or idea may seem familiar, we "get it." But we do not get it. That is an illusion. If simple ethical ideas were as understandable and actionable as we think, we'd all be living by the Golden Rule.

There would be no addiction, gossip, or senseless violence. But we, as a human community, are made up of hearers and not doers of the word. This is one of the core maladies of human nature. It is among the reasons why valuable ideas of wisdom and self-help, like Hill's, go unheeded.

Therefore, in this book discover and review:
  • How to develop or sharpen your Definite Chief Aim
  • Your understanding of the steps to success written about in Think and Grow Rich
  • How to really "get" Napoleon Hill's seminal book
  • Implementing Hill's ideas in your lives

Reminding yourself of, and rededicating yourself to, life-giving ideas is always a worthy pursuit. It always pays off. The Path to Riches gives you that very opportunity with the ideas of Napoleon Hill. Run and embrace it.

The Other Side of the Mind

The human mind today is undergoing the most exciting and intensive probing in the history of mankind. In this unusual and provocative book, W. Clement Stone, a hard-headed businessman, and Norma Lee Browning, a top reporter, combine forces to explore The Other Side of the Mind – the fascinating, often controversial world of mind phenomena. Keep an open mind as you read about:
  • The strange psychic life of the Australian Aborigines
  • The mystery of the fire-walkers of the Fiji Islands
  • The yogis of India, who may hold the key which scientists everywhere are looking for to unlock the hidden reservoirs of human efficiency and energy
  • Extra-sensory perception (ESP) and what the future holds for para-psychology
  • The researches into hypnosis, cybernetics and ESB – electrical stimulation of the brain
  • Lourdes, for whose cures medical science has no explanation
  • The sensitives of mediums who claim to have special psychic powers and the honest appearing charlatans who prey upon the gullible
  • How you can relate the facts in this book to your own life to develop and maintain your physical, mental, and moral well-being

You won't find any direct mention of the work of Napoleon Hill in this book—but its coauthor, insurance magnate and philanthropist W. Clement Stone, not only presided for many years over the Napoleon Hill Foundation but was instrumental in ensuring that Hill's books remained in print and in front of the public eye. Hill called Stone the third most successful person to use the ideas he popularized, following Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Edison.

Yet Stone had another side, reflected in this book: He was a longtime benefactor of psychical research, including the pioneering work of researcher JB Rhine at Duke University concerning ESP, a term Rhine popularized.

Think back to a time when you experienced a deeply meaningful, emotionally charged concurrence of events, such as urgently needing to see someone who showed up at an uncannily propitious moment. Statistical tools can measure the odds of such an event, but they cannot fully capture the emotional import to one or more of the individuals involved, and hence the occurrence's truly anomalous nature. Clinical ESP research, of the kind considered in The Other Side of the Mind, suggest that such events may be far more than happy accidents. They may be the ESP of daily life.

Hill took such prospects seriously, as his careful readers know. Reviewing this aspect of Hill's broad catalogue of interests, as the authors do in this book, will deepen your appreciation for, and ability to benefit from, the master teacher's ideas.

The Seventh Step

This book highlights and reinforces the greatest power inherent within each of us. This power is the "secret," if there is one, to any legitimate program of self-help. With it, progress is not only possible but inevitable. Without out, progress will fail to arrive, even with the best therapies, medications, and programs. It is: ravenous hunger for self-change.

Author and ex-convict Bill Sands wrote The Seventh Step in to describe and prescribe his successful prison fellowship program. The Seven Steps fellowship, which Sands started, has led large numbers of ex-felons to better, more purposeful, and more productive lives.

Bill Sands' work, like that of Bill Wilson, coauthor of Alcoholics Anonymous, is not limited to one kind of person facing one kind of crisis, in this case a life of in-and-out incarceration. Although the seven-steps approach was designed by and for prisoners, it can, like other modern fellowship programs, free anyone from perpetual conflict and desperation.

This book and its message are not cure-alls or substitutes for a more just society, or for a society like ours that imprisons too many of its people. Rather, The Seventh Step functions as a blueprint for individual revolution, which, in turn, requires helping others get free from lives of crisis.

Here are the 7 Steps to Freedom:

1.  Facing the truth about ourselves and the world around us, we decided we needed to change

2.  Realizing that there is a power from which we can gain strength, we decided to use that power

3.  Evaluating ourselves by taking an honest self-appraisal, we examined both our strengths and our weaknesses

4.  Endeavoring to help ourselves overcome our weaknesses, we enlisted the aid of that power to help us concentrate on our strengths

5.  Deciding that our freedom is worth more than our resentments, we are using that power to help free us from those resentments

6.  Observing that daily progress is necessary, we set an attainable goal towards which we can work each day

7.  Maintaining our own FREEDOM, we pledge ourselves to help others as we have been helped

In this book, discover:
  • Emphasizing seeking help from a higher power
  • A need to believe that something beyond the motor and cognitive functions of the individual lends invisible help to one's efforts
  • "Your" Infinite Mind
  • Reestablishing lasting personal freedom, and helping others do the same
  • Using that power of freedom to help free us from our resentments
  • Substitute for resentment and negative compulsions our strength, love, honor and freedom
  • The realism of Bill Sands
  • Seeing your "possibilities"

Wake Up! You're Alive, 30th Anniversary Edition

This fascinating book has a clear and defined message, that one can live a healthier, happier life by conditioning the thoughts that pass through the mind. Written in a lively, narrative style, the reader is carried along, page after page by the Fox brothers. The book is written with a great deal of humor and clarity. It is a look at the power of the human mind and spirit, as seen through the eyes of a physician. The case histories and stories within, illustrate the relationship between your thoughts, beliefs, health and disease.

Wake Up! You're Alive is written and structured to be absorbed in a single sitting. You can afterward return to it many times, which the author encourages. But the Fox's message is so plain and urgent that it can be taken in and acted upon quickly. Won't you try the door of the vault?
