Dr. Nima Dayani to Speak on Using Stem Cells to Regenerate Children's Adult Teeth

NEW YORK - February 28, 2018 - (Newswire.com)

Dr. Nima Dayani, an established leader in endodontic care whose practice, Endodontics, Oral Surgery and Dental Implants Rehabilitation of New York City (http://www.nycendodontics.org) is based in Midtown Manhattan, will be presenting a lecture on tooth regeneration using patients' own stem cells to the New York County Dental Society on Friday, March 2.

Dayani will first review the latest research on the potential role of stem cell stimulants in activating patients' own stem cells to promote healing and regeneration of pulp and dentine. He will then delve into how stem cells are currently used in pediatric patients to regenerate "adult" teeth pulp that has died prematurely. "Stem cells are already pivotal in pediatric endodontics," said Dayani. "It's only a matter of time - and additional research - before adults can benefit from tooth regeneration."

Dayani explained that, in children, the roots of the permanent teeth are not fully formed, so an infection can cause the tooth pulp to die. "When that happens, the tooth stops growing and the adult tooth can be lost prematurely," he said. When the pulp of a pediatric patient's permanent tooth has died, it's possible to sterilize the tooth canal in a way that kills the bacteria while preserving the host cells. "From there, stem cells in the jawbone can be transferred into the canal space, triggering the pulp-like tissue to grow back," Dayani said. "The tooth canal becomes the perfect incubator." Once the pulp regenerates, the tooth can continue to grow.

Dayani noted that, while longitudinal research is necessary to prove the long-term efficacy of stem cell pulp regeneration in pediatric patients, enough data exists to support the use of the technique today. "There's no reason to give up on a child's permanent tooth just because it's infected," Dayani said. "Differentiated stem cells can be leveraged to save the permanent tooth, and have the potential to change the future of dentistry for both children and adults."

Dayani's lecture will take place from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. on March 2, 2018, at the New York County Dental Society, 622 Third Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, NY.
