Recovery In Motion Reports on the Prevalence of Dual Diagnosis Disorders

Many individuals suffer from a mental illness and an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, and both issues need to be addressed in the treatment plan for the best outcome, RecoveryInMotion.com reports

Tucson, AZ - December 9, 2017 /MarketersMedia/

According to DualDiagnosis.org, 17.5 million individuals suffer from a mental disorder in the country. Of these 17.5 million, approximately 4 million likewise suffer from an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs. Over the past few years, the number of individuals seeking treatment for a dual diagnosis has risen by four percent, yet more than half of individuals struggling with this issue have never sought help. They may seek treatment for the addiction or the mental health issue, but not both. Recovery In Motion (recoveryinmotion.com) would like to change this.

"Recovery is dependent on a person seeking treatment for both their mental health issue and their addiction. When one is neglected, the patient is more likely to relapse. The mentally ill may return to drugs or alcohol to seek relief from their psychological issue if it is not addressed when symptoms appear in the future. They self medicate in this situation to obtain the relief they desire. In addition, the addict may not be aware that he or she has a mental health issue and will appear to overcome the addiction only to return to the substance of choice. When both issues are addressed, this becomes less likely," Nick Jones, spokesperson for Recovery In Motion (www.recoveryinmotion.com), explains.

Dual diagnosis goes by many other names. Some professionals refer to it as co-morbidity, while others call it a co-occurring disorder. All mean the same thing, however, in regards to the definition. Either problem may come first, and people who have one disorder aren't always more at risk of developing the other. However, when a person suffers from a mental illness that has yet to be diagnosed, they may begin using drugs or alcohol to medicate themselves and bring the symptoms under control. In contrast, long-term use of drugs and/or alcohol may lead to the development of a mental disorder.

"Regardless of which problem comes first, a treatment plan that addresses both issues is needed. Medication and evidence-based therapies are of help at this time, and the treatment plan must be customized to meet the needs of the individual. Individual and group therapy are usually offered, along with a family participation program. The treatment center needs to recognize the impact of the support system in the recovery process," Jones continues.

Patients need to thoroughly understand what they are dealing with in order to fully recover. However, many individuals never learn they have a mental disorder until they enter addiction treatment. While this can be challenging for the patient and his or her family, it also offers relief for most, as it helps to explain past behaviors of the patient. The treatment plan must be comprehensive to ensure all areas are addressed.
