SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. - Sept. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center (www.writerscenter.org), announces its selection of events and courses for the fall season. Beginning Tue., Sept., 8 thru Wed., Dec., 23, events include writings and dance by Alvin Ailey dancer and choreographer Hope Boykin, readings by MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow Edward Hirsch, 2015 International Book Award for Poetry recipient Xánath Caraza and PEN/Martha Albrand awardee Nick Flynn, who will also teach a master class. Also announced was the return of the popular Po’Jazz on Hudson series, and one-day poetry intensives taught by noted poets Alex Dimitrov and Fred Marchant.

“These are exciting times at The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center,” said Jewel Kinch-Thomas, the Centers’ newly appointed Executive Director. “In addition to our well established courses and events, we are introducing The Prose & Poetry Project to present work in innovative ways that will engage more audiences and expand the reach of the literary work. The Writers Center is located at 300 Riverside Drive, Sleepy Hollow, NY, in the Philipse Manor Railroad Station.

The Prose & Poetry Project includes the following series: Words &…featuring components of music, food, dance or film to enhance the audiences’ connection to the reading; Women Reading Women highlight the feminine voice through emerging and established female authors and poets; Word Masters are authors and poets who have and are making strides in prose and poetry; Spotlight Series focuses on the writings of HVWC instructors and emerging authors and poets; An Evening With is an open concept category presenting artists from different literary genres; Lyrics as Poetry are presentations that explore the poetic form in song lyrics and Word Warriors is a spoken word series to engage young people in self expression as activists and outsiders.

Prose & Poetry launches on Fri., Sept. 11, at 7:30 pm, with Women Reading Women presenting Jacqueline Tchakalian, Marion Brown and Francesca Maxime reading their contemporary poems grappling with grief, loss and life, $10.00. Words &…premieres Sun., Sept. 20 at 4:30PM, when Joanna Dobson reads from The Kashmiri Shawl, accompanied by sitar player, Daisy Paradis, and Indian cuisine provided by Chutney Masala Indian Bistro, $12.00; on Sat., Oct. 10, Hope Boykin of Alvin Ailey shares her writing and exceptional choreography, $10.00; Fri., Nov. 20, 7:30 PM, Five Kattywompus Poets & Rough Magic, led by poet and scholar Cornelius Eady, evoke Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie, $10.00. On Sun., Nov. 15, 4:30 pm. Po’Jazz on Hudson returns with musicians and poets in a tapestry of sound and word, featuring Golda Solomon, host and wordsmith, poet EJ Antonio, violinist/ poet Rosi Hertlein and Saxophonist/clarinetist Berta Moreno. The Sun. Dec. 13, 4:30 pm., Po’Jazz installment features Solomon, 2015 International Book Award for Poetry, poet Xánath Caraza, bassist Ken Filiano and soundrhythium Michael TA Thompson, $10.00.

On Fri., Oct., 2, 7:30 PM, Susan Hodara, memoir writing instructor at the Center and three of her students usher in the Spotlight Series reading from her novel, Still Here Thinking of You, $10.00. The series continues Fri., Dec. 11, with Slapering Hol Press (SHP): Emerging Voices with nine graduate students, from three Masters of Fine Arts programs, reading from their new work, $10.00. An Evening With presents a weekend of captivating readings on Fri., October 30, 7:30 PM, Meagan Brothers reads from her just published LGBT-Young Adult tome, Weird Girl and What’s His Name, $10:00; and Sun., Oct. 25, 4:30 pm, SHP presents Disturb/Enrapture, Denise Duhamel, Maureen Seaton, and Michael Klein reading from their new Sibling Rivalry Press collections, $10.00.

On Sunday, Oct. 18, 4:30 PM, master poet Edward Hirsh launches Word Masters, reading from his collection, The Living Fire: New and Selected Poems. Joining him is Guggenheim Fellow Emily Fragos reading from Hostages, her latest collection, $10.00. Word Masters continues Sun. Dec. 6, 4:30 PM, when Nick Flynn reads from My Feelings. Joining him is Writer’s Center poetry instructor Kathleen Ossip reading from her book, The Search Engine, $10.00. Prior to his reading, Flynn will teach a Master Class, from 1:30-3:30 PM, $124.00.

The Center’s 10th Annual War & Peace Reading, Wed., Nov. 11, 7:30pm, “Writers & Poets on War & Peace,” features Robin Hirsch, author of Last Dance at the Hotel Kempinski, Sarah White, Author of Wars Don’t Happen Anymore, and six community poets, $10:00.

In honor of the 15th anniversary of 9/11, SHP, the small press imprint of The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center, has reprinted The Scottish Café, by Susana H. Case. Written after Case witnessed the collapse of the World Trade Center, these poems explore “how to live a life of quality in the face of nihilistic political forces that threaten to overwhelm.” When originally published, poet, editor, and critic, Paul Zimmer in the Georgia Review wrote, “Perhaps, someday, Susana H. Case will write the story of the Scottish Café in prose for a wider audience."

To its full roster of poetry, fiction and non-fiction courses, the Center has added professional development courses, such as Public Speaking and Marketing for Artists.
